[edit] Synopsis

Before a Valentine's Day meeting at the corporate offices in New York City with Jan and the new CFO, Michael lets slip to the other branch managers that he and Jan "hooked up". At the meeting, Josh Porter's presentation (Stamford) goes well. Michael shows a video called "The Faces of Scranton" before reluctantly providing the information the CFO requested. Craig from the Albany branch is completely unprepared and attempts to cover for it by suggesting that "maybe I should've slept with [Jan], too."

Angela gives Dwight a "Dwight" bobblehead doll, and he gives her a key, presumably to his home. Phyllis is inundated with gifts from her boyfriend Bob Vance, while Pam is irritated with Roy when the only thing he gives her for Valentine's Day is the promise of the "best sex of [her] life". Jim is forced to witness Ryan turn Kelly down for a date.

In a private conversation with Michael, Jan is convinced that her career is over, but Michael defuses the situation by explaining to the CFO that it was a bad joke and accepts responsibility for the situation. As Michael leaves, Jan kisses him then groans when she realizes they were caught on camera.

[edit] Notes

For a list of songs featured in this episode, see List of songs featured on The Office.
  • After this episode, the show went into hiatus due to the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
  • Conan O'Brien's cameo in New York marks the first time a celebrity has appeared as himself or herself on the show. He later visited the Dunder Mifflin offices in the opening segment of the 58th Primetime Emmy Awards.
  • Pam changes her hair for the first time in this episode.[1] Several hairstyles were shown to Greg Daniels before the one used in the episode was selected.[2]
  • Rainn Wilson got to keep his bobblehead after filming ended.[1]
  • When this episode was filmed, Angela Kinsey had a tan from attending the Golden Globes, which had to be concealed with makeup.[3]
  • Dwight's line about a ham being a romantic gift was written during filming on the set. The writers didn't have a punchline in the scene, so they came up with several alternatives, including ham, as well as "a boombox".[4]
  • This is the first appearance of Dunder Mifflin Stamford boss Josh Porter, Dunder Mifflin Albany boss Craig, and Dunder Mifflin Buffalo boss Dan Gore.
  • This was one of six episodes submitted to Emmy voters for Best Comedy consideration, which The Office went on to win. The other five were "The Dundies", "Booze Cruise", "Christmas Party", "The Injury" and "The Secret".
  • Most of the street scenes in New York City were improvised. They had to be kept short because crowds quickly formed around Steve Carell when he was recognized.[5]
  • At some point between this episode and Season Four's Survivor Man, Albany manager Craig has been replaced by a man named Jeff.
