Valence Technology, Inc. sells various types of phosphate-based lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, including N-Charge and U-Charge, and has recently introduced a new type called Epoch. [1] The Epoch power system is Valence’s third generation of lithium-ion battery, making its debut at the EVS-23 show in Anaheim in December 2007. [2] These batteries are intended to replace lead acid batteries.
They have many uses including in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), wheelchairs, robotics, at sea, remote power, military, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and various other devices; and some portable electronic devices, such as a notebook computer, cell phone, and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
Founded in 1989 as a research and development company by Lev Dawson [3] Valence has its headquarters in Austin, Texas, and facilities in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mallusk, Northern Ireland, and Suzhou, China. [4] Carl E. Berg is Chairman and principal stockholder of Valence Technology and in March 2007, Robert L. Kanode was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer. [5] Valence is traded on the Nasdaq Capital Markets under the ticker symbol VLNC. [6] The company holds an extensive, international patent portfolio of issued and pending lithium phosphate patents. [7]
Companies deploying Valence's battery technology include Segway in their Segway Personal Transporter. [8] [9]
In 2004 Valence was honored as a Top 100 Innovator by Red Herring, chosen for the high-performance, safe, low-cost and environmentally friendly attributes of its energy storage solutions. [10]
