Comments on surrealism and romanticism. While viewed as somewhat outmoded, Romanticism was neither shunned or tabooed by the early surrealists. The listed settings of this books share the gothic genre, which actually was looked upon with fascination by many surrealists, including Breton, especially The Monk by Matthew Lewis, with its oneiric sexual convolutions. Breton himself, always eager to cite credits to his thought and activity, said that surrealism was a development of romanticism.
