[edit] Requested move

This article has been renamed from Val Gherdëina to Val Gardena as the result of a move request.

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was - unanimous support for move. Keith D (talk) 21:44, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Val GherdëinaVal Gardena — I'm well aware of the previous consensus that in this area geographic names should reflect the local majority language - but that is overridden in this case by the fact that thanks to skiing the valley has an English WP:COMMONNAME - and that's Val Gardena. Google has 288 hits for Val Gherdëina versus 202,000 for Val Gardena. (talk) 13:59, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Support - as above, WP:COMMONNAME should decide FlagSteward (talk) 14:01, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Weak support While we prefer not to follow raw google, the sheer numbers here are impressive. Some of those 200+ hits are for an SCA name Nimue di Val Gherdëina, which is not English. I suppose the multitude of advertisements come under WP:NCGN#widely accepted name, test 6. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 18:48, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Support I agree with septentrionalis that raw google searches have flaws, but all the evidence presented suggests that the proposed title is the common English usage. To pile on more guidelines, see WP:ENGLISH. Erudy (talk) 02:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Support. Apparently Val Gardena is not only a widely used name in skiing ads, but also in science (sociology, geology, biology), see these google scholar searches: Val Gardena 449, Val Gherdëina 0. Markussep Talk 12:23, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Support. I have heard of Val Gardena, and almost always refered to with that spelling. Noms demonstration of its popularity in Google leads me to think I am typical among English speakers, so Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) supports the move. Callmederek (talk) 21:26, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Support per nom. Sebisthlm (talk) 12:21, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion

Any additional comments:
  • See Talk:Comuni of the Province of Bolzano-Bozen for a related discussion. The result of that discussion was to use the single widely used name in English, and if there isn't one, pick the local majority name (which would be the Ladin name Val Gherdëina in this case). I guess "Val Gardena" qualifies as a widely used name. Markussep Talk 12:23, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

[edit] Images

There's some nice pics on de:Val Gardena but it looks like the best of them has a dodgy Wikipedia-only licence. Anyone want to sort out the licensing? Thanks for doing the name change Keith. FlagSteward (talk) 11:01, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
