From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vaikunda Malai (Tamil:வைகுண்ட மலை) is a hill which is the part of Mahendragiri Hills situated near Athala vilai of Kanyakumari district in the chain of Western Ghats. This hill gain the religious importance in Ayyavazhi through the festival Ayya Vaikunda Avataram, the day of incarnation of Ayya Vaikundar.
During the celebration, two processions one from Thiruvananthapuram and other from Tiruchendur reaches Athala vilai and both the processions goes around (circumambulate) this Vaikunda Malai and a Jyothi(flame) is lit at the top of this hill symbolising the birth of Vaikundar.
But unlike other Ayyavazhi holy places, this Vaikunda Malai is not mentioned in its Scriptures.
