Adriano da Gama Kury (born April 25, 1924) is a Brazilian philologist.
He is the son of Lebanese immigrant Elias Kury and Brazilian Maria Celecina da Gama Kury. Has two elder brothers and one sister.

[edit] Early life
As a boy, Adriano da Gama Kury lived in the Upper Amazon in the rainforest. He was raised in a strict Catholic education and discipline, involving physical punishment and diverse humiliations, which made him to become an atheist as soon as he could have a choice. Due to the merchant activities of his father, the family moved to Santos, SP, where he lost his father, allegedly murdered on the beach. Then he came to Rio de Janeiro, where he built his life.

Married to a student of his from Rio, after moving among different Brazilian cities, ultimately fixed residence in Rio de Janeiro, living very close to the Casa the Rui Barbosa.

Adriano da Gama Kury demonstrated early his interest on Grammar. He worked as an assistant to important names of Philology such as Aurélio Buarque de Holanda. Involved in teaching at different Brazilian universities, also worked along a book editor in São Paulo, taking part in educational project for TV. Organizer of the Catalan Studies workshop in the 80s, helped developing an interest for this nation and its culture in Brazil.

At the Casa the Rui Barbosa, he started to develop critical editions of texts, which took many years, even after his official retirement.

1924 - Born in Sena Madureira, Acre, Brazil, where started his primary education (1932-1934).
1934 - Moved to Santos, SP (1934-1937), Natal, RN (1938) and then to Rio de Janeiro, RJ (1939).
1941 - Finished ground school in the Colégio Pedro II, Rio de Janeiro.
1942 - Passed in first place in the contest to proof reviewer of the Imprensa Nacional and starts working.
1947 - Started high school in the Franklin Delano Roosevelt School, Rio de Janeiro.
1948 - Started working as auxiliary editor in the Instituto Nacional do Livro. Finished high school.
1949 - Entered the Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia in the course "Letras Neolatinas". Through contest, entered the Casa de Rui Barbosa as auxiliary editor. Started teaching Portuguese and then Latin in the Franklin Delano Roosevelt School (up to 1954).
1953 - Graduated in "Letras Neolatinas" in the Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia.
1956 - Entered as a professor of Portuguese Language in the Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia. Entered as an official state high school teacher.
1960 - Entered as professor in the Instituto Rio Branco.
1965 to 1970 - Lived in Brasília, DF teaching Literary Theory in the Universidade de Brasília.
1968 - Started first hand contact with the Catalan Language in Spain.
1970 to 1972 - Lived in São Paulo, SP working for the LISA editor and the Faculdade Salesiana de Filosofia.
1972 - Moved back to Rio de Janeiro, RJ working in a great number of Universities. Started teaching in the Universidade Federal Fluminense and the Faculdade Hélio Alonso.
1973 - Started working in the Faculdades Integradas Estácio de Sá. Educational consultant to the TVE (projects "João da Silva" and "Conquista") up to 1977.
1974 - Became Full 1st Class Professor (Brazilian "Livre-Docente") in the Instituto de Letras of the Universidade Federal Fluminense with the thesis intitled: "A Oralidade Transfigurada — Aspectos estético-formais da prosa de Graciliano Ramos."
1975-2000 - Professor of Romance Philology in the Universidade Santa Úrsula.
1976 - Chairman of the Philology Section of the Casa the Rui Barbosa.
1980 - Organized the "Week of Catalan Studies" in the Universidade Santa Úrsula.
1994 - Awarded the golden medal "Aurélio Buarque de Holanda" of Philology, from the União Brasileira de Escritores, Rio de Janeiro.
1999 - Awarded the medal "Rui Barbosa" from the Casa the Rui Barbosa.
Member of the Academia Brasileira de Filologia.
Married (February 1st 1961) to Wilna Brilhante Kury, has a son, two daughters, two grandsons and one granddaughter. Presently (early 2006)lives with his wife in Botafogo.
