The Utwig are a fictional race of beings featured in the sci-fi Star Control computer game series.
The Utwig are a race of fatalist and sophisticated humanoids; they are mentors to the Supox and are the keepers of the Ultron device, which they believe provides happiness and enlightenment (while the Supox think the Utwig traded a planet's ransom for a device with a few flashing lights.)
Utwig can never show their faces, and are required to wear masks for as long as they live. They have developed "Mask-Etiquette" for the thousands of masks they wear. Each is suitable for different activities, moods, festivals, and ceremonies. This custom was born in their ancient violent past, when they came to the conclusion that the expression of primal emotions upon faces was the source of war and violence. Therefore faces must be hidden in order for a culture to progress peacefully.
The accidental destruction of the Ultron sent the entire species into a state of depression and resulted in the destruction of all masks except the Mask of Ultimate Embarrassment and Shame. Its subsequent reconstruction in was more than enough to pull the previously unaffiliated Utwig and Supox into the war against the Ur-Quan.
The ending credits revealed that a ceremonial dance (involving throwing the Ultron around) destroyed it a second time, but the credits are not considered to be canonical; in it, many species broke character as though the actors themselves were talking.

[edit] Utwig Jugger
Their ship, the Utwig Jugger, is considered a powerful ship, capable of taking even a Chmmr Avatar or Kohr-Ah Marauder with little difficulty. Its main weapon is an array of six front-mounted cannons that fire rapid salvos of short-range energy bolts. Crucially, these 'energy spears' do not deplete the ship's energy reserves, allowing the Jugger to emit a constant barrage. The secondary weapon is a shield which renders the Jugger immune to damage. This shield consumes energy at a constant rate, but converts impacting enemy weapons-fire into energy, recharging the batteries. This energy conversion is the only way the Jugger can gain energy during battle; reserves will not recover on their own. A skilled Jugger pilot, however, can approach even the strongest foe directly while sustaining little or no damage and effectively building energy reserves to maximum, simply by triggering the shield an instant before any incoming fire makes impact, all the while battering the enemy with continual salvos of its own.
One flaw of the Jugger, however, is its middling speed, combined with the limited range of its weapon. A very fast ship can give the Jugger a hard time, though any enemy that must close to within the Jugger's effective range in order to attack is itself in serious jeopardy. A Jugger captain's most formidable enemies are the Chenjesu Broodhome's D.O.G.I. drones, since they home in on the Jugger and drain its battery power, and the Androsynth Guardian, since its 'Blazer' form does not replenish the ship's batteries. In skilled hands, a VUX Intruder can be a dangerous adversary, as it can effectively immobilize the Jugger through the use of limpets, which then allows it to mount a final assault from an area not protected by the Jugger's guns (i.e. from the flank or from the back). Another notably difficult enemy for the Jugger is the Supox Blade. The Blade's rapid shooting machine-gun-like main weapon can easily have the Jugger captain triggering the shield with no impact and battery boost to the Utwig, thus resulting in slow depletion of the shield battery.
