Utrecht Art Supplies was founded in New York City in 1949 by artist Norman Gulamerian and his brother Harold Gulamerian. At that time Norman was unable to find quality artist canvas locally so he began importing artists' canvas directly from contacts he had in Europe. Artist friends of Norman expressed an interest in having him supply them with artist canvas and in a short time he had established a reputation as one of the premier suppliers in New York City. Since the brothers' factory was located near New Utrecht Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, they decided to operate under the name, Utrecht Linens, Inc.

The Gulamerian's art supply business grew quickly and in 1957 they developed their own acrylic gesso used for priming artist linen and canvas. By the early 1960's the Utrecht line had been expanded to include artist oil paint and artist acrylic paint. The acrylic gesso, oil paint, acrylic paint and hundreds of other art materials are still produced in Utrecht's plant in Brooklyn, NY.

Now headquartered in Cranbury, NJ, Utrecht Art Supplies not only manufactures art supplies but also has 35 retail locations, a mail order catalog, and an on-line art supplies store.
