Indian caste system
I wrote"Amongst the non-brahmins the hierachy of the castes was more fluid prior to the arrival of the British. Castes would rise or fall in prestige depending on their economic or political power. For example, during Maratha rule in 1600 & 1700s, many of the rulers such as Holkar & Shinde came from lower castes and in the process gave higher prestige to their castes. The caste system really became rigid during the British raj. The British had a tendency to codify everything under their rule. They also started to enumerate castes during the ten year census. This created a record of castes. Previously, none existed or was not as meticulous. Prof. G.S. Ghurye has written extensively on history of caste in India Ghurye"
This not original research. if you have access to any socialogy library , you can read books by professor Ghurye who was an authority on Indian castes from 1924-1980s.Professor Ghurye
Please have some patience, read about the subject before deleting it
The article at present does not give a proper picture of caste system. As one reader pointed out, the article either talks about brahmins or dalits. This excludes the majority of Indians who belong to castes different from the above. There is a great deal of research done by Ghurye & others before him about castes "acquiring" Kshatriya status etc, notably during census performed during the British Raj days. also have a look at the following: caste & British —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.9.96.126 (talk • contribs).

As mentioned in Wikiproject India newsletter of March 2007, the weekly collaboration of the Indian wikiproject has fallen from its once high feats. This message is to request the users to visit the collaboration page and help rejuvenate it.
The present collaboration of the week is Religion in India. Please go through the talk page of the article to see the proposed changes in the article. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:12, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Map on Agrawal
I noticed that you removed the map on the Agrawal article showing Agroha.
The map would be key, if more of the documented history is added including historical dispersal from Agroha to Hissar, Delhi, Gwalior and eventually to Calcutta.
I would suggest keeping the map until a specifically drawn map can be added. --Malaiya 23:18, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

sir, the kannadi script and whole para bragging abt kannadi origin is unwarranted. if u want kannadi script there plz add marathi script in rashtrakuta and chalukya. thank u. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.95.8.116 (talk • contribs).
I believe u have had discussed this with mahawiki, arya sarvabhau, etc.right? why do u ban whole city range to avoid Marathi voice? let him go and complain. u allow marathi origin theory and script in chalukya and rashtrakuta and shorten yadavas kannadi theory and all problem will be solved.

Indian caste system
I've added useful references by Ralph T.H. Griffith [1895-6] for you to understand that the british and non Indian researchers for sure knew lot in the Vedas. In spite of knowing those why they maintained the use of caste in the forms? This continued the persistance of case and religious differences among the Hindus. Again the epics those on which the Hindu life style stands, are on the basis of the VEDA teachings as they where know to be from the GOD and not the ones written by MANU who is an human. So, how did the British Government Introduce the Hindu on the basis of Dharmaśāstra, which advocated a lot for the higher caste and did not use the Vedas BalanceRestored 12:34, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

You may be interested in this
Dear Utcursch, - You may be interested in this. Wikipedia currently seems to indicate that the office of Surveyor General of India no longer exists, but working with hardcopy Indian maps quickly disabuses one of such a notion. Wikipedia names only 4 Surveyors General of India, all predating 1947. On the Internet, I have found at least two more: Dr. Prithvish Nag & Lt. Gen. A.K. Ahuja. I have found the Survey of India website, and have mailed them for a list of Surveyors General, etc. See these pages:
- Surveyor General
- Surveyors General of India Category page
- Survey of India
- Interview with SGI Dr. P. Nag
- Lt. Gen. A.K. Ahuja
Kind regards,

Deletion of Big Brother UK ratings page
Why on earth did you delete this very informative page??? Only 5 of the 13 respondents in the debate recommended it should be deleted. Big brother is a cultural phenomenon in the UK, and previous ratings provide a fascinating insight. Could you please give a full explanation of your decision.
