State Route 42 is a highway completely within Box Elder County that connects SR-30 to Idaho State Highway 81 at the Idaho border in a span of seven miles.

From its southern terminus, the highway runs west-northwest until Cedar Creek, where it turns northwest. It continues in this matter until the Idaho border.

This highway was formally signed U.S. Route 30S which was eliminated in the 1970's and replaced with Interstate 84.
