[edit] Route description

SR-13 begins at an intersection with US-89 and US-91 at the south end of Brigham City and heads north through the city, the turns west at the north end of the city to intersect I-15 and I-84. It continues northwest across the Bear River through Corinne and turns north parallel to I-15 and I-84 through Bear River City. It intersects I-15 and I-84 at Elwood and continues north around the east side of Tremonton.

North of Tremonton, SR-13 continues north through Riverside and Plymouth, turning northwest to end at another intersection with I-15 near Plymouth.[1]

[edit] History

The first iteration of SR-13 existed between Joseph and Cove Fort. When the proposed route of Interstate 70 in Utah was finalized in 1962 this route was renumbered SR-4, which was the legislative designation for the proposed route of I-70. The SR-13 designation was immediately reused as the legislative designation for U.S. Route 89 through Logan Canyon. This arrangement existed until the 1977 Utah state route renumbering[3]

What is modern SR-13 was signed U.S. Route 191.[4] The construction of Interstate 15 in Utah caused the state of Utah to push for the deletion of this iteration of US191 as well as most of U.S. Route 91. In 1962 the route of US-191 was legislatively absorbed by an extension of state route 84.[5] Until the completion of I-15 most of this route was signed as "Temporary I-15". As portions of I-15 were completed, the route was adjusted accordingly.[3]

As part of the 1977 Utah state route renumbering all state highways that had duplicate numbers with U.S. Highways or Interstate Highways within the state were renumbered. As the number 84 was also in use for Interstate 84 most of SR-84 was renumbered SR-13.[5]

Modern SR-13 was commissioned with this renumbering, running from the current southern terminus to near Riverside, then east to SR-30 near Collinston. In 1983, the northern terminus was truncated to Riverside. In 1988, the Utah Transportation Commission proposed extending SR-13 to its current northern terminus; this was approved in 1989.[2]
