USS Walrus (SS-431)

USS Walrus (SS-431), a Balao-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the walrus. Her construction by the Cramp Shipbuilding Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was authorized but the contract for her construction was cancelled on 29 July 1944.

A fictionalized Walrus entered service in 1941 in Edward L. Beach's novel Run Silent, Run Deep. She conducts a distinguished war campaign, becoming the number-one submarine of the Pacific Fleet before she is sunk by the infamous Japanese captain known as Bungo Pete.
