USS Monongahela (AO-42) was a Mattaponi-class oiler in the United States Navy during World War II. She was the second U.S. Navy ship named for the Monongahela River in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Monongahela was laid down as SS Ellkay, a type T2-A tanker. The ship was built at Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania as hull number 227 and USMC number 158 in 1942. The U.S. Navy took control of it the same year.
