Usman (town)

Usman (Russian: Усмань) is a town in Lipetsk Oblast, Russia, located on the Usman River, 75 kilometers (47 mi) south of Lipetsk. It is the administrative center of Usmansky District. Population: 19,600 (2005 est.); 20,133 (2002 Census); 20,878 (1989 Census).

It was founded in 1645 as an ostrog and named after the Usman River. In 1652, it was raided by the Tatars. It was granted town status in 1779.
