Userbox expressing love for subtitles

Hello,

it is okay for me to propose an idea like this for a userbox, right?

Well, if so, I think it would be nice to have a userbox that says "This user prefers subtitles" or "This user prefers subbing over dubbing".

Not only am I horrible at typing in the code of Wikipedia, I can't think of a better text (a bit more humorous?) and maybe there should be a nice little picture too. But what kind of (unlicensed?) picture? Evilbu 21:07, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

sub This User prefers subtitles.

wat bout that?-- ExpImptalkcon 21:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I had the same idea, before I found this page. I made one that looks like this:
sub/dub This user prefers subs over dubs

A "set" might be:
  • prefer subs over dubs
  • prefer dubs over subs
  • no preference
And maybe others like subs only/dubs only for the very opinionated?
--Cartoonmaster 00:11, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... It probably would make sense to cross out what you don't like...

A "not everyone is Irish" userbox

I've not quite worked out userboxes yet. Can someone construct the following?:

  • Image: Shamrock covered by a question mark

How about some comic strip boxes?

Can I suggest some comic strip user boxes? Below is a list that I would like to see. I could create text-only ones. But I would appreciate if someone could provide some GDFL or free images that suggest each strip (or as many as possible). We can't use fair use images due to limitations of the licensing. Live Music

Looking over the music-related infoboxes, I couldn't find any that simply advocate mention live music. I tried to make one with flashy colors to suggest a laser light show as seen in the pics below, but I'm not completely thrilled with what I came up with. Ideally, it would have a nifty picture of some laser lights in the id box instead of "LM". Anyone want to help or make suggestions for colors/pics? -Tobogganoggin talk 02:02, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

LM This user encourages others to attend as many live music performances as possible.

or simply...

LM This user prefers live music.

OK, here's a shot at it:

I should probably also add that I don't know if using that image for a userbox is prohibited or not. What licenses, if any, allow images to be used in userboxes? -Tobogganoggin talk 02:53, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Tools that can be used to create Nation and state user boxes

I mentioned this before elsewhere, but as stated below, these templates are for your use as much as mine. Enjoy them. Will (Talk - contribs) 01:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

For those of you building user boxes to show where people have been, I have created templates that given 2-3 letter code, return the name or flag of a nation. Matching templates convert that code and a state or province code (like IL for Illinois) into either the state/province name or the flag of that state or province.

Currently, I support all nations that have at least one top-level domain code for the Internet and a free use (not fair use) flag image. All flag images are believed to be SVG. For states, you use the same code and the Postal code for states or provinces (at least in the nations I support so far).

The only nations where I can currently do state or province lookups are the US and Canada. I don't expect to add more nations due to the amount of work required. However, I can provide instructions on how to extend my support. Just ask on my user page. I will create the basic template in my user namespace. You fill it in. All state/province lookup templates begin with "User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceName " or "User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceFlag " followed by the nation code. The functions for Canada are {{user:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceName ca}} and {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceFlag ca}}. (I have a central template (see below) that adds the nation code on the fly.) Note that the US has only one code ("USA") and it is not a domain name. If you pass no domain name, the US is used.

To Get a:
Name Flag
For a: Nation {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetCountryName}} {{user:Will Pittenger/templates/GetCountryFlag}}
Province or State {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceName}} {{user:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceFlag}}

Please feel free to ask any question you have at my talk page. Feel free to use these templates as you need to. They are intended to support my "Where I have been" templates, {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Nation Flag Entry}} and {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Province Flag Entry}}, but I wanted them to be usable inside user boxes. They are a tool waiting for your use. Will (Talk - contribs) 01:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

New tools to list user boxes

I would now like to offer a trio of tool templates for listing user boxes. Together, they create a table with columns for Name (which shows how to call the box), Created By (defaults to read "Me"), and a sample of the box. The samples can normally be displayed with no code. All of the boxes I list at User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes are now displayed with just one line of code per box. I even was able to group boxes by type.

You use {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/User Box List Start}} to begin the table. It adds the header section. Then, for each row, call {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/User Box List Row}}. Then, to complete the table, call {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/User Box List End}}. Only the row template requires any parameters.

BTW: If you would like to list templates like I do at User:Will Pittenger/templates, feel free to check out and use {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Template List Start}}, {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Template List Row}}, and {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Template List End}}. They require more parameters than the user box templates, but you will find they are more flexible too. However, you still call them in the same order you do the user box templates. Lovers of rhotics

I'm not familiar with programming, so sorry that I can't provide a demo for this. Rhotics are "non-lateral liquid consonants", and are mostly written as r or similar variants in many languages. I suppose if this userbox stands, it should be put in the grammar section or elsewhere.

Maybe the text can be: This user loves rhotics very much./ This user is a fan/lover of rhotics. And then rhotics links to its article. --Fitzwilliam 16:45, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Words like 'This user has the condition Gilbert's Syndrome.' or soemthing along those lines.

I have several ideas

  • How about a "This user doesnt have a clue how to make userboxes" userbox?
  • A "This user is emo" userbox
  • And a "This user is a ninja" userbox?
  • Also a "this user is in secondary school" for all the UK pupils.

Tycoonalex 19:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

"This user doesnt [sic] have a clue how to make userboxes" does not help bring together users with similar interests. "This user is emo" might have more weight to it, but are people really just interested in "being emo"? I can see "This user likes emo style music" being more acceptable, but still. "This user is a ninja" unless you study ninjitsu this shouldn't be a userbox, and in that case it should be "This user studies ninjitsu." (Tdmg 07:26, 20 March 2007 (UTC))

--The Dark Side 01:10, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for creating these.

I tried the boxes, the first two look good, for the third I had expected the # to be replaced by the user-supplied number, while the box currently renders as "... of #5545 m".

I noticed that the first two boxes use the past tense, while the third uses the present tense.

I guess the choice of past/present tense needs to be decided for each userbox. Speaking from experience I believe that e.g. a contributor to an open-source project is going to contribute over a longer period of time, thus the present tense could also be useful. For the Marathon many will not be sure that they will complete another one, and as such the 'has completed' makes sense (to me). In the same way I would say that a mountaineer cannot really be sure to go back up to the highest altitude that that user has previously reached. As such I would prefer also the past tense for the mountaineering box, i.e. "This user has practiced mountaineering at an altitude of 6789 m".

I was thinking that someone could create a (er... maybe some) about the Pit of 100 trials that says "this user got down to the xst, xnd, xrd, or xth level in the Pit of 100 trials in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" then another one that says, "This user got down to the 100th level in the Pit of 100 trials in [Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]] and got squashed by the boss down there", and, "This user got down to the 100th level in the Pit of 100 trials in [Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]] and obliterated the boss down there". Thank-you for your time... Sir Intellegent 15:32, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Idea for the length of a second

I think it would be good for a userbox that says "This user knows that a second is precisely 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a Caesium atom." Prototype 01 14:28, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok, here's one for you:

{{User:The_Userboxer/Userboxes/Second_Length}}
This user knows that one second is exactly 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a Caesium atom, I'm smart.

Learn to make one yourself. I learned in five minutes. Enjoy! --The Userboxer 21:19, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Tom Green Live

I am not sure how to make userboxes, but I suggest one for Tom Green Live under the talk show section. I would like it to be a double box, the left reading "webo-" and the right, "vision" (if it fits). And the main content with a green background would read "This person enjoys watching [Tom Green Live] on the national internet. (Of course with the wikilink). Please let me know when this has done. Thank You. Socby19 05:21, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Socby19

I wasn't completely sure about the text, so feel free to modify it or contact me and I will :) Here is the link: User:Eddie1232/Userboxes/User_TomGreenLive eddie speak 15:42, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
webo- This user enjoys watching Tom Green Live on the national internet. vision
  • Thanks, I modified the colors a little bit, to make it clearer. I also made it read "national internet", because that's somewhat of a meme of the show. Socby19 16:32, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Socby19

Slipknot, Radiohead & Acidplanet

I have an idea for three userboxes. I just don't know how to make them... okay, my ideas:

A userbox for Acidplanet, that says something along the lines of: "This user is a civilian of Acidplanet at (username - linked to the site)

One for lovers of Slipknot (like myself) that has the 'S' logo on the left and something along the lines of "This user can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes" or some other well known Slipknot lyric...

And last but not least... something for lovers of Radiohead, the "no suprises" one is cool, but i'd love to see one with the 'Bear' logo on the left and something like: "this user may be paranoid, but they're no android" or some other Radiohead lyric.

If someone wants to make these, that would be great. Alternatively, if someone would could possibly to teach me how to create userboxes, that would be great also - as I could then do them myself. After all: "Catch a man a fish, and he will not be hungry that night. Teach a man how to fish, and he will never go hungry again."

Idea number 4

Ooooh! And I would absolutely looooooove to make/get a userbox that has to do with Alice's Adventure's In Wonderland. It's my favourite book, and I would love to show this on my userpage. If there is already one for it, that I have missed, give us a shout eh? :D Franz T. Speeling 12:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
