Archives

Since certain wonderful people have fixed problems addressed in these talk pages, perhaps something should be archived. That is something I can do, if someone asks me to. I did not say I could do a good job of it. Practice makes perfect, and I have not had a lot of practice yet. User:AlMac|(talk) 11:40, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

I think there should be subtalk section for Userbox ideas! --RaptorX 12:03, 25 December 2005 (UTC) -- Not a member Userbox Wikipedia Project

Where would these go?

This is an old box template:user copyright and I just made something in the same vein template:User copyright mid dealing with copyright on Wikipedia. Where would you put them? Ifnord 17:27, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

BIG PROBLEM

Have a look at the deletion proposal for user NoSanta at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:User_NoSanta.

Adrian Buehlmann brought up the point that this is in violation of WP:AMT... which means that half the userboxes on WP:UBX are also in violation.

Furthermore, the outcome of this proposed deletion has repercussions for the entire WP:UB. If it is deleted then many of the arguments for deletion will be valid for countless userboxes... which once again illustrates the fundemental importance of this proposal.

SO - something needs to be done. And I have no idea what. Image:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 18:52, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Subst the boxes into the User __ templates? --AySz88^-^ 19:00, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

I made several suggestions:
  • Put all the User ______ templates on the list of templates that should be subst'd
  • Subst within the User ______ templates
  • Permanently protect userbox and never change it
If the last method works to get rid of the WP:AMT problem, that'd probably be the best solution.
I just realized; don't templates like user en also violate the same thing? Nope, they subst it in the User ____ templates, at least for "en".

Interests: Hobbies

I feel that Userboxes/Interests/Hobbies has enough userboxes to have it's own category under 'Interests'. Does anyone else agree? Morgan695 21:44, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

If you mean Wikipedia:Userboxes/Hobbies then it's all yours! I've even made a red-link for you! Image:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 21:52, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Interests being grouped with Beliefs

I see that the "Political, social, ethical stances etc." section has been merged into the "Interests" sections. I fail to see why. Since when is your religion, sexual orientation, gender, status, your mental health, etc. an interest? The page doesn't flow well anymore, and the interests section seems too crowded. I propose that we keep it the way it always was. Morgan695 00:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Hmm... I didn't know this had happened. This is what happens when you check your watchlist from the bottom upward... I'll be right back. Image:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 15:39, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I think it should go back as before. Ian13ID:540053 16:14, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Template:User soccer am2

Well I still have no idea what has happened... but from what I know (no a lot), I know that change is not good. So turn it back! Image:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 16:39, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

userbox fix please

can someone please fix the userbox for capitalist? its too big, unaesthetic.--Urthogie 04:05, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

What are some of the things needed changing? Zach (Smack Back) 04:09, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
I've resized the image on from 50px to 45px. Does this help? — Jeff | (talk) | 05:47, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
I would probably shrink the outline by a few pixels, since most templates have their outlines as 1px. Zach (Smack Back) 05:54, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for quick help, have a wonderful life for this!--Urthogie 05:56, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

last 2 requests :)

User WikiProject Spam User Carnivore

In both of these, the left cell that contains the word ("spam") or the picture (it's of meat) goes too far to the right, and its out of order in comparison to user userboxes. Thanks for fixing it.

--Urthogie 08:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

I've fixed the one at User Carnivore by scaling the picture down to 45px, then using a black background so it's not as obvious that the original picture was rectangular. The original author of the template has already reverted one attempt to resize the picture; so, if my edit gets reverted, you can just use the following code in place of User Carnivore on your user page:

As for User WikiProject Spam, this could be fixed by decreasing the font-size slightly, but I'm hesitant to make the change since the current font-size seems to be a good Userbox standard. — Jeff | (talk) | 10:18, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
maybe it should be SPM?--Urthogie 17:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Deleted Userboxes

Admin User:Kelly Martin has deleted many userboxes. About 5% of these deletes was for a genuine good reason. How should we deal with this? Morgan695 22:39, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

UPDATE To help mediate this clear abuse of adminship, please sign the form at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Kelly Martin.Morgan695 22:57, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
  • We need to revert all the userbox pages to before kelly started deleting userboxes. That way the red links will be visible and we can all see what userboxes need to be recreated.--God_of War 02:07, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
Has someone been removing the redlinks? Kelly doesn't seem to have, looking at her contributions, and there are plenty of redlinks left in the subpages linked from here. It would be much more easy to find the ones she deleted by looking at her deletion log, though, and it would be a lot more practical to undelete them instead of re-creating in any case. —Cryptic (talk) 02:30, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Could someone please undelete User flag NZ and ? —Nightstallion (?) 08:24, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Antimonarchist Wikipedians

I recreated template:User antimonarchist. I realize there's been some contention, but I assume it was deleted because it contained a (possibly protected) coat of arms. In its place, I used . Bhumiya 07:56, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Userboxes/Emoticons ?

I believe someone is playing a sarcastic joke here referring to the number of useless userboxes on wiki. I'll repeat what I wrote there:

There are plenty of Userboxes on wikipedia that border uselessness. Some are made in humor and others to inform visitors of the user's views on certain topics. These boxes however, take the cake. They aren't even funny. I personally don't care if a Wikipedian is "undecided" or "evil" or a "flirt". This is not myspace.com  :-/ TCorp 15:09, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

While I dont use those boxes, I can see how they could be useful in expressing one's current mood on a talk page. As long as its not over done :) --Urthogie 17:26, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

I don't believe they should be used in talk pages at all. Last time I checked, user boxes were not emoticons. They are for use on user pages. TCorp 00:42, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Is it legitmate on Wiki to use the Images of the emoticons anyplace? Example ... posting a reply at the Reference Desk, where any place else we might want to place a grin after some statement ... expressing thankyou for someone assisting us with something ... an article on emoticons in the general culture of the Internet. User:AlMac|(talk) 02:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

People use them on their general user page. It doesnt violate any rules, and they are used by many people. If you dont like them dont use them - UK «ßØÛ®ßÖѧ3» Talk | Contrib's 20:11, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Dodgy sports templates

The following list of templates were added to Wikipedia:Userboxes/US Sports under the heading "Style 2", with the previous versions (editted to avoid WP:FU violations) titled "Style 1" (see diff). All of the following templates are in violation of WP:FU, all break the WP:UBX "user ~" prefix rule, and several are repeats of already existing templates on the above page. I don't understand how to do TfDs in bulk, but this needs to be sorted out.

Deano (Talk) 18:34, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

For now I'm just redirecting duplicate template forks to the original version (seems to mostly have been done already). And just because I'm feeling nice I've started to rename the new ones to bring them in line with the naming conventions and re-add them to the listing (after removing the unfree images naturaly). If people keep putting the images back or creating even more forks it's TFD time though. --Sherool (talk) 20:43, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
They look good now, but I echo Sherool's statement. Zach (Smack Back) 20:50, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
This user supports userboxes .

The boxes on the top of this page

I love that this project has decided that attacking other editors is its primary purpose. It so totally confirms my belief that it's a complete waste of time. Phil Sandifer 02:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

A plea for the Germanic plural

Will members of the Userbox project please agree that the plural of "userbox" should be "userboxen"? This is a wonderful application of the Germanic plural, and makes for great mirth. And it just fits. So userboxen, please. Even changing the name of the project to reflect this would be a good idea. Thank you. Babajobu 08:22, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Seconded. -- jeffthejiff (talk) 08:59, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

all religious userboxes have been speedy deleted!!!

This is ridiculous! Anyone got any idea who did this?! I think the userboxes should be protected against what seems to me to be admin vandalism Larix 09:55, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Here is his explanationJeff | (talk) | 11:02, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
That's a lame excuse to censor information you disagree with. As if by erasing people as having religion or political views makes their views disappear. How very encyclopediac.

Thank you to whomever reverted the vandalism!!! Just hope it does't come by again anytime soon.

Request for Undeletion

I would like to request that the userboxes that have been wantonly deleted over the past few days be restored, until such time as proper deletion processes can be undertaken. A lot of effort went into creating these templates, and they should not have to be recreated by hand simply because an admin thought they were not worthy. Please, can someone help?! --Dschor 10:59, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Ditto.
MSTCrow 11:12, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Second that--God of War 18:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Third. Ian13ID:540053 19:08, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Fourth, I think many have already been restored, looking thorugh the list of boxes may help in recovering some. --Grand Edgemaster Talk 19:26, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Could someone please undelete user flag NZ, or at least post the code to my userpage? It was deleted, but never restored, most likely because I'm the only one who had been using it... —Nightstallion (?) 20:04, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Note to Editors

I was bold and added a Note to Editors in response to users randomly deleting boxes from categories with no note of their action or a move to a new section and Admins deleting boxes they don't like.--God of War 19:11, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, maybe now the madness will slow down. Station Attendant 22:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Archive 1

I created Archive 1 with the full code of every single user box linked to the main page. I did this by taking the categories on the main page turing them into metas and using subst: to generate the code. Then I took the result of this and replaced those metas with subst. So this page should contain the full code of every single box. Warning: It's a full megabyte long so it could crash your browser. Now if another userbox is deleted out of process by a rouge admin we have the code to fix it.--God of War 23:27, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Images removed

Why are images now removed? Practically all of the userboxes have no images and most images of a symbolic nature are gone. For instance, in the article Cross nearly all of the cross pictures are gone. What is going on?--Zaphnathpaaneah 02:20, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Most pictures are being removed due to them violating the Wikipedia fair use poliyc, which can be read at WP:FU or by clicking the link in my signature. Our guidelines state that fair use images are not allowed to be used on the userspace. Zach (Smack Back) Fair use policy 02:23, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Wait....even some images that are under the free licenses are being removed. I think we are having some technical issues now, since no image is coming up correctly from the pages that I visit. Zach (Smack Back) Fair use policy 02:25, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Definitely technical issues. Don't panic. --SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 02:47, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
I saw this phenomenon last night. I also wondered what happened to the images. Station Attendant 01:46, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Colours of ITV Userbox?

When the new look starts in a few days time, so the colours of the ITV Userboxes needs to be changed.

Oh, there are new colours? Ian13ID:540053 17:20, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

New ITV Logo, so it better to use it's colour scheme

Removing tfd notice

Now that the TFD is almost certain to be a "KEEP". Can someone's bot go and remove the notice from the hundred or so boxes. This is just insane.--God of War 01:51, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

You may need to wait until it is official. User:AlMac|(talk) 01:28, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Request

Given some spare time which I don't have at the moment I'd put some of my own together but I have a couple of requests for userboxes for my user page if someone would be so kind:

  1. This user is hearing impaired
  2. This user is short sighted
  3. This user has a heart condition or This user has a heart murmur depending on how specific I can be
  4. This user is interested in family history

I don't really know where to look to see if they exist already. Is SKS could throw something together for me I would be very grateful. -- Francs2000 02:21, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

I put them in Ideas Section --RaptorX 16:24, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
