The USCGC Northwind was a Wind-class icebreaker used in the Antarctic for Operation Highjump. The ship was commanded by Captain Charles Thomas, USCG on the expedition. The cutter was the only U.S. Coast Guard vessel to participate in the military exercise on the frozen continent (1946-47).
She also participated in Operation Nanook at the end of World War II. A description of the voyage and exercise is described in the account of Beltrami (AK-162).
The Northwind (WAGB 282) was decommissioned in Wilmington, North Carolina, on January 20, 1989 - the last remaining Wind-class icebreaker.
