Another Tip of the moment...

How to use red links

When a link in Wikipedia leads to nowhere, it is displayed in red to alert our editors that it requires attention. A red link can mean one of two things:

  1. The link is broken and no longer leads to an article (perhaps because the underlying article was deleted). In such a case, the link needs to be removed or renamed to point to an existing article.
  2. A new article is needed. When a Wikipedian writes an article, it is common practice to linkify key topics pertinent to an understanding of the subject, even if those topics don't have an article on Wikipedia yet. This has two applications:
    1. From within an article, such a link prepares the article to be fully supported. At any time, a Wikipedian may independently write an article on the linked-to subject, and when this happens, there's already a link ready and waiting for it. The red link also gives readers the opportunity to click on it to create the needed article on the spot.
    2. In topic lists, it is useful to include every topic on the subject you can possible find or think of. When they are turned into links, the list immediately shows where the gaps in Wikipedia's coverage for that subject are, since all of the topics missing articles will show up in red. Such lists are useful tools in developing subject areas on Wikipedia, as they show where work is needed most.

[edit] Music Samples

 Music sample:

John Mellencamp "Our Country" noicon

Sample from John Mellencamp's "Our Country". From the album Freedom's Road.
Problems listening to the file? See media help.

For the music samples I use the free-for-a-while MP3 Magic 2.0 from the great Applian Technologies. You get 7 days to test it out, and only $10 to buy. (Their suite of apps is sweet because it is the best to record intenet radio.) MP3 Magic lets you create 30 second clips that conform to Wikipedia's rules for length. You then use the free, open source Wikipedia application called Audacity to convert your clips to .OGG format for Wikipedia. Select Edit, Preferences, File Format tab, set OGG Export Setup to "0" to create reduced-quality 64 kbps .OGG versions of your clips.

[edit] Images

You can also use the paired <gallery>Images: here</gallery> tag to create a image gallery feature or stand-alone image like these from the editing toolbar:

"Our Country"[1]

Written by John Mellencamp

"Well I can stand beside
Ideals I think are right
And I can stand beside
The idea to stand and fight
I do believe
There’s a dream for everyone
This is our country

There’s room enough here
For science to live
And there’s room enough here
For religion to forgive
And try to understand
All the people of this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

That poverty could be
Just another ugly thing
And bigotry would be
Seen only as obscene
And the ones that run this land
Help the poor and common man
This is our country

From the east coast

To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

The dream is still alive
Some day it will come true
And this country it belongs
To folks like me and you
So let the voice of freedom
Sing out through this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home

This is our country"

[edit] Pull Quotes

Main article: Super Session album - one of my favorite blues works. Have a listen in your browser in your PJs!
To the best of my knowledge, based on an unnamed source, the new head of SONY/BMG shut down the 5.1 SACD department and let everyone go. A year and a half ago I remixed Super Session and Child Is Father To The Man for them in 5.1 SACD. They both came out incredible and so I mastered them with Bob Ludwig. Now it seems they will languish on the shelves under the current administration of SONY/BMG.,........Typical, in soooo many ways." [edit] Truncate lines

Shakespeare: Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair some time declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

[edit] Creating "Notes" and references

Creating a References table in Wikipedia is almost as easy as creating a link. Look at the code at the top of the song lyrics sample table to see how to use the paired ref tag, e.g.,

to create the citation[3]. Then add a section near the bottom of the article containing the single, unpaired references tag. You will see that at the bottom of this article in edit mode.

[edit] Reusing Notes

Just include the "name" parameter in the ref tag (and don't leave it empty when you reuse it):

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die,

life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.[4]

I swear to the Lord,

I still can't see,
Why Democracy means,
Everybody but me. [4][5]

[edit] Using cite web Template

Richie Havens uses open D tuning on the guitar. By fretting all strings it produces a major chord on any position on the neck of the guitar.[6]

[edit] Tips of the Day

How to provide a link to a specific Google Search

Especially on talk pages, and sometimes in External link sections, links to Google searches can be useful. The Wikimedia software that powers Wikipedia lets you make links to Google by including google: as the prefix for the link, like this:

google:Tipster.

Which looks like this:

google:Tipster

Note: It is important not to use spaces in the search. To add more parameters to the search, separate them by a plus sign, +. For a phrase search, use a hyphen (minus sign), -, between each word. E.g. to search for "Tip of the day", use Tip-of-the-day.

To provide a link to a Wikipedia-specific search, include in the google-link +site:en.wikipedia.org (no spaces before or after), like this:

google:Tip-of-the-day+site:en.wikipedia.org.

Which looks like this:

google:Tip-of-the-day+site:en.wikipedia.org

To clean up the link so that only the part you want to show is presented, use the pipe, like this:

"Tip of the day"

Which makes it look like this:

"Tip of the day"

Navigate faster using Wikipedia shortcuts

Many of the pages in the Wikipedia namespace have specialized redirects called "shortcuts" that can be entered into the search box on the left side of your screen. Normally these shortcuts start with WP: and then a capitablized abreviation for the page name. Some common shortcuts are: WP:, WP:DEPT, WP:FAQ, WP:FUN, WP:IMAGE, WP:VP, and of course, WP:TIP. A semi-complete list of shortcuts is available at Wikipedia:Shortcuts.

[edit] How to create a shortcut

Shortcut class redirects should be tagged with Template:R from shortcut (edit talk links history) so they will auto-categorize in Category:Redirects from shortcut.
All templates should be added on the same line as the #redirect Pagename. templates.

Example: #redirect Pagename R from shortcut.
