Coordinates: Uri is a town on the river Jhelum in the Baramula district, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, and a sector named after the town. The town is very near the de-facto Pakistan border. The town was leveled in the Richter 7.6 2005 Kashmir earthquake on 8 October 2005.

As of the 2001 India census,[2] Uri had a population of 5256. Males constitute 63% of the population and females 37%. Uri has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 46%. In Uri, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
