Upreti (देवनागरी:उप्रेती), is a Hindu surname used by many Brahmins living in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state of India. As per legend, they are the descendents of the sage Bharadwaj.
According to Pandit Badri Datt Pandey's legendary book History of Kumaon, the Upretis were originally inhabitants of Maharashtra region of western India, and they migrated to Nepal owing to some persecution or other disturbances. From Nepal, they gradually moved towards the adjoining Indian regions of Almora, Ranikhet, Nainital, Pithoragarh.
