Having been in China three weeks, Merton goes to Chengdu. There he sees some traditional opera and, when he develops a cold, gets some traditional Chinese medicine. Merton then goes to Guilin where he takes a river cruise, tours a traditional village and watches some fishing. He also stays in a hotel called "Fawlty Towers" where the staff include Basil, Sybil and Manuel. Finally Merton goes to Guangdong province, and tours the capital Guangzhou. Over a month into his trip, Paul Merton arrives in Shanghai and stays in the world's tallest hotel. He goes to a golf club with a successful local businessman. Later he and Emma go to a public square, where parents match-make for their children. Merton is taught how to dance by Lena, who the following day shows him round her favourite places; a market followed by a traditional costume shop, where he and Lena dress up in traditional costumes. He attends a dinner party with a group of female socialites. Merton and Emma later visit Thames Town, a new town where the houses and shops are in an English style. On his last day in China, he and Emma have a Chinese foot massage. |
