Up In Smoke is the sixteenth episode in the sixth season of the American crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
[edit] Plot
Excessive smoke from a fireplace alerts the fire department, which in turns calls the CSIs who find charred remains inside the chimney. A gym membership card found on the body which identifies him as the son of the house's owner, Tad Sidley. The opportunity to search the house leads Catherine and Warrick to look for any evidence about a one-year-old disappearance of a young girl who was on her way to this house before she vanished without a trace. When Grissom sees the "murdered" person in a gas station surveillance system, he knows that Tad is actually alive. The corpse found in the chimney was actually the one of a dead person, that Don Fitzgibbons placed in it with Tad's gym ID card to alert his father to think that the one killed was his son. Later in the episode, after the CSIs check both blueprints of the house's top, they find out that they were different. The gang starts removing bricks from the chimney and find Caroline's body (Don's daughter) in the chimney. They performed an autopsy on her and determined that she died stabbed multiple times and then bled to death. Tad accuses his father of murdering her, later mentioning the line: "But you're dead to me!". Don reveals that he falsified Tad's death because he wanted to make his father feel what it is to lose a son, after he had done the same thing.
