I attended Westview High School (Beaverton, Oregon) between 2002 and 2006. During the four years that I went there, I participated in the International Culinary Club, where I was president my senior year. In my junior and senior year I was an active participant in the student government and cat crew (most people might know this to be link crew), a mentorship program to the incoming freshman. Also, in my senior year I was the boy's varsity soccer team manager. I cheered them on to the state finals, where they lost to Jesuit High School. I feel that I have the right to consider myself an expert on my high school because I was so involved. I was given the name of DEX because if anyone had a question on where an event was or what time it was at, they could come to me and I usually had the answer.
[edit] Big Town Hero
After I graduated from Westview I needed to get a full time job. Big Town Hero was hiring and I got a job there within 2 days of handing in my application. Big Town Hero (or BTH) was started by a college student in Corvallis back in 1981. His motto was "to provide a healthy, better-tasting alternative to fast-food restaurants - a sandwich shop that served great food with service to match." I was one of the shift leaders and could run the shop by myself. I worked there for over a year and a half, I quit last September so I could continue my education here at the University of Oregon, but I am returning for the summer. BTH is famous for their freshly baked bread, unlike the other leading sandwich shops, BTH's bakers wake up every day with the sunrise to make the dough, hand shape it and then proof/bake the bread. Some shops have expanded and now serve breakfast sandwiches.

My first job was working at See's Candies for the holidays; Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter. I started in November of 2005 and continue to come back every Christmas season, when they get really busy. A question that I get a lot is "Do you guys make the chocolate in the back [of the store]?" the answer to this is no. All of the chocolates are made in one of two locations; the factory in San Francisco or the factory in Los Angeles. The popular episode of I Love Lucy in the chocolate factory was filmed at one of the See's Candies factories. See's opened in 1921 and has continued to thrive now into the 21st century. In the past year they have come out with sugar-free candies. The selection is limited to chocolate cover peanuts, almonds, walnuts and chocolate bars. They hope to come out with sugar-free versions of the regular candies in the next few years. The reason why it takes so long is because See's wants to maintain the same quality that Mary See's (founder of See's Candies) put into her chocolate when they opened in 1921.
[edit] Beaverton, Oregon
Beaverton, Oregon is my hometown. Although I have moved countless time and attended 7 different schools, it has all been in Beaverton. Naturally, if you've lived in a place all of your life, you become pretty expert about it. Currently, Eugene is the second largest city in Oregon (behind Portland). Beaverton is planning on changing that statistic. On the drawing board is to expand the city and to build more homes and schools. Also, they hope to combine outlying towns such as Aloha, Bethany, and Cedar Mill into Beaverton (this is how they hope to become the second largest city). There have been some hesitations as the tax bracket is slightly higher in Beaverton. Besides that, Beaverton is home to one of the few Krispy Kreme's and SONIC's Drive-In in Oregon. The area of Tanasbourne has also grown tremendously with the addition of The Street's of Tanasbourne.
[edit] Hairspray
Hairspray (2007 film) is one of my all time favorite movies. I have watched this movie at least ten times on top of seeing it in the theatres twice. The film has an awesome lesson to it. The film was based off of Baltimore in the 1960s. Many people were hesitant to change or being different. Tracy and her mother, Edna, learned that it was okay to be big. The Corny Collins Show became integrated with the addition of Little Inez. Although all of the characters had to go through some rough times, including Link, in the end everything worked out. My favorite part was when Velma Von Tussle was caught on live TV (during the Miss Hairspray competition) complaining about her daughter, Amber Von Tussle, not winning even after she switched the votes and immediately was fired.
[edit] International Culinary Club
I chose to add a club that I participated in, in fact, I was the President my senior year. Below is the article that I posted within the club section of my high school's article, Westview High School (Beaverton).
The International Culinary Club (ICC) was a club few people knew of. In fact, after 2006, the club may have gone under as the President graduated and the supervising teacher retired from Westview. Members paid only $10 a year and enjoyed both creating international dishes and eating them too! Some examples of dishes that ICC cooked included Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick's Day, Spring Rolls for Chinese New Year, and a baked Banana dish native to Africa. Most members were part of the culinary class, but the club was open to everyone. Below is the 2005-2006 yearbook page for ICC. I have circled the ICC pictures in red, so that you do not have to search hard for them. If you are interested in starting this club back, talk to one of Westview's fabulous teachers, I'm sure one of them would love to help you out!
