Unterseeboot 78 (1940)

Unterseeboot 78 or U-78 was a Nazi German U-Boat that served during World War II, mostly in the Atlantic. It was first launched on December 7th, 1940, with a crew of 41 under the initial command of Alfred Dumrese. The U-Boat changed command several times throughout the war. Other commanders were;
- Kurt Makowski (07/1941-02/1942)
- Max Dietrich (02/1942-07/1942)
- Ernst Ziehm (07/1942-11/1942)
- Helmut Sommer (11/1942-05/1943)
- Wilhelm Eisle (05/1943-11/1944) who had the longest tenure as commander of U-78
- Horst Hubsch (11/1944-04/1945)
U-78 was sank after being hit by Soviet artillery fire off the coast of Pillau on April 16th, 1945.
