From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unterseeboot 371 was a Type VIIC U-boat laid down November 17, 1939 Howaldtswerke, Kiel. In 19 patrols, she sank 8 ships for a total of 51,401 GRT, including two warships.

On May 7, 1942 U-371 was depth charged by two sub chasers, heavily damaged and had to return to base. At 04:09 am on May 4, 1944, one day after causing severe damage to USS Menges (DE-320), she became the first victim of an Allied anti-submarine tactic in the Mediterranean Sea known as "Swamp", and was sunk off the Algerian coast north of Constantine, in position 37°49′N, 05°39′E, by depth charges from the US destroyer escorts USS Pride (DE-323) and USS Joseph E. Campbell (DE-70), the Free French destroyer escorts Sénégalais and Alcyon, and the British escort destroyer HMS Blankney. Three crew members died while 49 survived.[citation needed]
