Unterseeboot 340

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unterseeboot 340 or U-340 was a German World War II Type VIIC submarine commissioned on 16 October 1942. U-340 served with 8. Unterseebootflottille (U-Boat Flotilla), for training and later with 6. Unterseebootflottille from 1 May 1943 to 2 November 1943. U-340 completed three patrols, but did not sink or damage any ships.

U-340 was sunk on 2 November 1943 near Tangier by depth charges from the sloop HMS Fleetwood, the destroyers HMS Active and HMS Witherington and a Liberator of RAF No.179 Squadron. One of U-340’s crew was killed and 48 survived the attack.
