Unterseeboot 20

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unterseeboot 20 or U-20 has been the name of several German submarines or U-boats during the First World War, the Second World War and in the post-war Bundesmarine.

  • Unterseeboot 20 (1912) was a submarine built in 1912 for service in the First World War, and grounded and blown up in 1916. This U-Boat sunk the passenger ship Lusitania.
    • During the First World War, Germany also possessed the submarines:
      • Unterseeboot B-20, built in 1916 and sunk in 1917.
      • Unterseeboot C-20, built in 1916 and surrendered in 1919.
  • Unterseeboot 20 (1936) was a submarine built in 1936, and scuttled in 1944 during the Second World War. It is reported that U- 20 was found in the Black Sea near the city of Zonguldak, by Mr. Selcuk Kolay, a turkish navy historian in 2007 (Report by "The Independent" of Jan.11.2008). The boat lies 2 miles off shore and 80 feet deep. Nearby U-19 and U- 23 were also detected. One of the boats would be surfaced and converted in a museum. The crew left the boats after scuttling and were interned in Turkey.
