Unterseeboot 1060
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unterseeboot 1060 or U-1060 was a German World War II Type VIIF submarine commissioned on 15 May 1943. The U-1060 was one of four Type VIIF torpedo transport submarines; each could carry 39 torpedoes, and were used to re-supply other U-Boats at sea. U-1060 served from 15 May 1943 to 27 October 1944 with 5. Unterseebootflottille (U-Boat Flotilla), a training unit, but did conduct operational patrols.
U-1060 completed six torpedo transport patrols. U-1060 ran aground and wrecked on 27 October 1944 south of Bronnoysund, after being attacked and damaged by rockets and depth charges from Fireflies and Barracudas from the carrier HMS Implacable, depth charges dropped by Halifax bombers of RAF No.502 Squadron, and Liberators of No.311 Squadron. 12 of U-1060 crew were killed and 43 survived the attack.
