A spiritual sequel or spiritual successor is a sequel or successor to a computer or video game, movie, stage play. novel, short story or other work involving a storyline. It consists of the same genre, themes, or high-concept, and is often created by the same producer, director, or writer; but may be created by some other producer, director or writer. Since creative teams often change employers but do not retain the rights to their intellectual property, if they have sold rather than given a license of rights to the work, they will often create a new product that is a sequel to their previous works in all ways except for being set in the exact same universe. It is not an official sequel, but it is the sequel "in spirit." However, the new work can have innovative characteristics not found in the predecessor. The term "sequel" implies that the new work is set in a later time, but it might be set in an earlier time, and more correctly be called a "prequel."
