The film was previously christened as Seval, however was replaced after finding out that another film directed by Hari and starring Bharath had registered the title. Early indications suggest that the film could be based upon a true story which occurred in Madurai in the 1970s.

Following the success of Polladhavan, the entire team barring the heroine decided to come together for the second time. Despite early indications that Nayantara would be playing the heroine, Shriya Saran was roped into portray the lead female role, her second project with Dhanush, following Thiruvilayadal Arambam. However due to the delay, primarily for the completion of Dhanush's other assignments, indications arose that Silambarasan had replaced Dhanush in the film.^[1]
