The University of the Sacred Heart —or Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (USC) in Spanish, or simply Sagrado— is a private Catholic university in Puerto Rico. It is located in the district of Santurce in San Juan. USC describes itself as a non-profit institution.

The University of the Sacred Heart has its origins as an elementary school established in 1880 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart, In the city of San Juan. Subsequently, at the beguinning of the XX century was purchased the estate of Count of Santurce and settled in properties that make up the campus today who is also best known as the top one rank University of Communications in Puerto Rico.

In 1935, the island's government issued the Letter Foundation, whereby it established the College of the Sacred Heart. Four years later, in 1939, gave its first academic degrees. The University of the Sacred Heart was founded originally As a centre of educational ladies in order to help women Puerto Rican culture to achieve a comprehensive, not only for their Personal enrichment but also for the benefit of the country.

In 1970, began a new phase of its history. The Religious opted to transfer ownership and governance of the institution to a Board of Trustees composed mostly of lay members. The Dynamic growth was markedly increased in both offers; academic and student numbers.

In February 1972, the Board of Trustees approved definitely the College and take the nature of a co-ed institution open to talented students of Puerto Rico and Internacional students.

In December 1976, the Board of Trustees officially authorized the use of the name University of the Sacred Heart (USC).

In 1985, the University established the first three programs: the study of Communication, Business and Education. Later on it open the doors to the analytical study of Master degrees in Management.

In 1990, a project was launched by the reduction in size of the Subgraduada enrollment in order to promote education over personalized and greater interaction between students and teachers. At present, the University reaffirms its founding charism and its commitment to service to Puerto Rico.

Corporate Philosophy and Mission

The University of the Sacred Heart is an educational Catholic institution in the ecumenical spirit of the Second Vatican Council. Find the Good and Truth wherever they may be, and conceives Education as one of the processes by which develops Fully and structured man. It receives and incorporates in an atmosphere of community to people of all faiths, races and cultures and maintains live the Gospel message.

The University carries its own mission within a framework of dialogue and Educational excellence by promoting values and attitudes that promote respect for the dignity of human beings in their personal dimension and Social solidarity.

As a Catholic institution, the University is guided by a spirit Ecumenical openness to dialogue and pluralistic. Recognizes that their Teachers and students are participants in the educational intellectual process, called to overcome barriers in society and to develop, by choice own social consciousness that directs the responsible exercise of their Work. The University promotes therefore an education participatory, active, personalizante and relevant to the realities of Social and cultural rights. The University Supports equal importance to training Humanistic, scientific, technological and professionals complementing capacity development of logical and succinct expression of skills that facilitate critical and creative thinking, attitudes toward teamwork and the ability to recognize, discern and practice values.

The location and urban reality of the University as a whole is the constant interaction with the environment and the pledges to serve as agent transformer of the Puerto Rican society and closer ties with the realities of their social and cultural environment as a Caribbean, Latin American and internationally student body of richness on diversity.

The Chairman is the principal executive officer of the University. His primary responsibility is to ensure compliance with the Corporate goals. It is his role to recruit staff Academic and administrative according to the established rules. Convenes and presides over meetings of the Senate, the Academic Board and, In discharge of its responsibility, regular reports to the Board of Trustees regarding the functioning of the institution.

The Academic Board is the official forum directly related to the teaching management. As legislature and advisory determines the general thrust of the programmes of teaching and research, and establishes general requirements for admission, promotion, retention and graduation of students. It consists of a broad delegation of teachers elected by the "claustrales", as well as representatives Student selected by students and members of "exoficio" of the University administration.

The Administrative Council is a forum for discussion and development options to address various issues management. It is conceived so, as an advisory body of the President of the University in instrument sectoral involvement appropriate. Review processes and formulates recommendations on administrative matters such as benefits marginal budget and master plan of management decisions and administrative affecting college life.

The Faculty of the University of the Sacred Heart consists of approximately 150 teachers. The academic backgrounds of Faculty members demonstrate diversity of preparation, both by areas of expertise, for the variety of institutions and Countries that have obtained their degrees.

Campus

The campus of the University of the Sacred Heart is composed of 33 Strings of undulating terrain and shading, from whose height can see Panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding urban areas. In its abundant vegetation, highlighting forest of tropical plants that contribute to the freshness and beauty of the land University.

For the development of its activities, the University has the following facilities: the broad main building architecture classical, lifted at the beginning of the twentieth century, which today accommodates the administrative offices and in whose center is home to the Chapel of the Institution, which was declared a National Monument in 1983, the residence of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, the Information and Resource Center Modern facilities of the Library. Then followed the student Residences, modern style, and south of the earlier, a complex structures consisting of classrooms, administrative offices and teachers, and an amphitheatre.

The Library Mother Maria Teresa Guevara, one of the vital units of the University for his significant educational role, offers services to teachers, students, administrators and others members of the university community.

The Theatre Emilio S. Belaval serves the development of a comprehensive programme of artistic, cultural and academic development. A modern student center and sports complex to accommodate several service offices and fitness facilities, indoor stadium, tennis court, Olympic pool, meeting rooms and cafeteria.

Among the major academic resources at the disposal of the University, can be singled out the library, laboratories, Communication and technology education, science laboratories, languages, nursing and television studios and recordings.
