[edit] History

After the Armistice of Mudros had been signed (17/30 October 1918), Greece was assigned by the allies to control of the Smyrna area in order to maintain stability and peace in the wider region. In the socio-political context, the prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos asked Professor Constantin Carathéodory - being a Professor at University of Berlin at the time - to take over the establishment of a new University. While Greece was negotiating the normalisation of its authority over the "Smyrna zone", the internationally known mathematician turned in a "plan for the creation of a new University in Greece", named “Ionian University” on 20 October 1919. He proposed three possible administration centres for the new university: Smyrna, Thessaloniki and Chios. The Government decided upon establishing the Ionian University, based in Smyrna, Asia Minor (in today's city of Izmir, Turkey) on 1 December 1920. Constantine Caratheodory undertook the task of co-ordinating the initial efforts. The first plans included the establishment of Schools which would promote the development of the area as a key spot for the Hellenism of the East, while, when it was almost ready to operate, the University was considered just as good as other well-known European Universities. However, the Ionian University never opened its doors to students due to the Asia Minor Disaster in 1922. The University of the Aegean is the continuity of Constantin Carathéodory's initial vision. Re-established in 1984, it is one of the newest ]]Universities in Greece]]. Today, the University has 17 departments and has become one of the largest Universities in the country.

[edit] Organization and Academic Departments

The central administration of the University is located in Mytilene (the capital of the island of Lesvos), while various departments have been established in Chios, Karlovassi (on the island of Samos), Rhodes, Syros and Mytilene. Because the University is set up on different islands, it constitutes a University-network covering all prefectures of the Aegean Sea.

One of the principal features of the Departments of the University of the Aegean is that they develop new scientific domains, usually interdisciplinary, which adhere both to the needs of the contemporary Greek society and global community as well as to students' requirements and expectations for high-quality studies combined with excellent career prospects.

The University of the Aegean has been the first Greek University that has fully been utilising Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)into its everyday activities, and thus implementing the Information Society in Hellenic higher education.

The University of the Aegean currently consists of five Schools and sixteen Departments that, together with the technical and administration offices, form the five University Units based on five islands in the Aegean Sea, as listed below:

[edit] Student Communities

An idea with the name "myAegean" originated in 2002 with a group of students from the Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering, in Syros. The aim of this initiative, according to the relative website, was to create a network portal for the whole of the Aegean University community by utilising any available technology.

According to the official community website: "myAegean is a student initiative of the University of the Aegean. It has come to act as a springboard for creative collaboration and exchange of ideas, a vehicle which encourage and promote direct, collective and qualitative communication and information exchange, without geographical restrictions".

[edit] Local Groups & Collaborations with other Student Groups

As it is also mentioned in several sources as well as on the official community website, "myAegean" acts (in a first level) as a human-based intra-network among the 5 islands where the University of the Aegean is situated. The effort is to make strong relations and connections between the local student teams as well as the rest of the university stuff and local citizens on the islands. The infrastructure gives new needs on organizational techniques and people try to develop events, to communicate and collaborate on two different ways: both locally (on every department-university unit/ island) and globally (as part of the entire University). There are being developed the exact 5 local groups: myAegean Syros members-group, myAegean Lesvos members-group, myAegean Samos members-group, myAegean Chios members-group, myAegean Rhodes members-group. There are several other Groups that collaborate with myAegean and work together to act in all islands/university units. At the present, the below Student teams-groups are part of the network supported with the "myAegean idea": AIESEC Local Group on Aegean Uni (based on Chios island), Student Team of Blood Donation on Aegean Uni (based on Lesvos island), Student Team of Astronomy on Aegean Uni (based on Samos island) and there are more to come, as the discussions continue.

"myAegean" also works (in a second level) and communicates with student groups and other efforts and volunteering groups in order to discover new ways in interaction and information exchange between students, professors, and individuals. There are also a lot of people that use the web portal as a news portal, in a daily basis.
