The University of Virginia Nursing School, established in 1901[1], has an enrollment of approximately 645 undergraduate and graduate students.[2] The dean of the nursing school is Jeannette Lancaster, who has held the post for 19 years and is the University's longest serving dean; in August 2008 she will be succeeded as dean of the school by Dorrie K. Fontaine.[3]

The School of Nursing is a member of the Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree programs of the National League for Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the Southern Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Education Board. The school is nationally accredited, and approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing.[1]
