The University of Thessaly was founded (along with the Aegean University and the Ionian University) in 1984 though presidential decision 83/1984, which was modified in 1985 through presidential decision 302/1985. According to the founding presidential decision the University of Thessaly included the following Departments:

Through the modification of the first presidential decision (in 1985) the following Schools were founded:

  • The School of Human Sciences (which included two Pedagogical Departments and the General Department)
  • The School of Production Sciences (which included the Department of Agriculture, Crop, and Animal Production, the Department of Planning and Rural Development, and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering).

Thus, the first phase of the organization and operation of the University of Thessaly involved eight Departments in all, all of which were seated in Volos with the exception of the Department of Medicine, which was seated in Larissa.

From these Departments, the two Pedagogical Departments and the Department of Agriculture accepted students for the first time in academic year 1988. The following academic year, 1989, the Department of Planning and Rural Development started it's operation, while during academic year 1990 the Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Medicine started their operation.

In 1993, the following Departments were founded, continuing the University's expansion:

The Elective Studies Programs started their operation in 1998. In 1999 the Department of Economics in Volos was founded and started it's operation in 1999. In the same academic year, the Department of Architecture started it's operation in Volos.

Finally, during the academic year 2000-01 the following, new, Departments started their operation: the Department of Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, and Networks in Volos and the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology in Larissa. Furthermore, the same year the School of Agricultural Sciences was founded, including the Department of Agriculture, Crop Production, and Agricultural Environment and the Department of Agriculture, Animal Production, and Marine Environment.
