The University of Thessaly (Greek: Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας) was founded in 1984. The University facilities are spread over four cities in the area of Thessaly, namely Volos, Larissa, Karditsa, and Trikala. In addition, the University has offices in Athens.
As is the case with all Institutes of Higher Education the University of Thessaly is a legal entity of public law with complete automony. It is supervised and granted by the state through the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. According to the framework for Institutes of Higher Education, the University is administered by the Senate, the Rector's Council and the Rector.

The University of Thessaly was founded (along with the Aegean University and the Ionian University) in 1984 though presidential decision 83/1984, which was modified in 1985 through presidential decision 302/1985. According to the founding presidential decision the University of Thessaly included the following Departments:
- Department of Agriculture, Crop, and Animal Production
- Department of Physical Education and Sport Science
- Department of Primary School Education
- Department of Nursery School Education
- Department of Planning and Rural Development
Through the modification of the first presidential decision (in 1985) the following Schools were founded:
- The School of Human Sciences (which included two Pedagogical Departments and the General Department)
- The School of Production Sciences (which included the Department of Agriculture, Crop, and Animal Production, the Department of Planning and Rural Development, and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering).
Furthermore, the Department of Medicine and the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science were founded as independent Departments. Thus, the first phase of the organization and operation of the University of Thessaly involved eight Departments in all, all of which were seated in Volos with the exception of the Department of Medicine, which was seated in Larissa.
From these Departments, the two Pedagogical Departments and the Department of Agriculture accepted students for the first time in academic year 1988. The following academic year, 1989, the Department of Planning and Rural Development started it's operation, while during academic year 1990 the Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Medicine started their operation.
In 1993, the following Departments were founded, continuing the University's expansion:
- Department of Special School Education
- Department of Department of History, Archeology, and Social Anthropology
- Department of Civil Engineering
- Department of Veterinary Medicine
The Elective Studies Programs started their operation in 1998. These included the Management of Rural Environment and Natural Resources Program in Volos and the Medical Biochemistry Program in Larissa. In 1999 the Department of Economics in Volos was founded and started it's operation in 1999. In the same academic year, the Department of Architecture started it's operation in Volos.
Finally, during the academic year 2000-01 the following, new, Departments started their operation: the Department of Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, and Networks in Volos and the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology in Larissa. Furthermore, the same year the School of Agricultural Sciences was founded, including the Department of Agriculture, Crop Production, and Agricultural Environment and the Department of Agriculture, Animal Production, and Marine Environment.

[edit] Student Organizations
Each Department of the University is associated with a Students Organization. All students enrolled in a Department of the University of Thessaly may become members of the corresponding Student Organization. Student delegates, appointed by the Student Organizations' Administrative Boards, participate in the Assembly of the Schools and Departments, and the European Educational Programs Committee.

The University of Thessaly facilities are spread over four cities in the area of Thessaly.
[edit] Volos
The University of Thessaly facilities in Volos are mainly located in three areas: the sea front, the area of Pedion Areos, and the area of Fytoko in Nea Ionia. While a large number of facilities are located in these areas, more facilities are spread out throughout the town center. The most important ones are the complex of the University Departments and the Central Library building in the area of Metamorphosi.
[edit] Larissa
The University of Thessaly facilities in Larissa are located in the town's center. Specifically, the Department of Medicine is housed in the renovated building of the former Katsigra Clinic in the Post Office Square. The University Hospital in Larissa has a capacity of 700 beds and operates since 1998 in modern facilities at the edge of the town. The clinical training of medical students takes place at the Hospital.
The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology is housed at the renovated facilities of the Pedagogical Academy of Larissa, which were offered to the University by the Organization of School Buildings.
[edit] Karditsa
The facilities of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are located at Trikalon 224 street. They include the Main Building of the Department, the Library Building, which includes the two main amphitheaters, the Morgue and Pathology building and the Clinic Buildinds which mainly constitute of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Surgery and the Department of Obstetrics and Reproduction.
[edit] Trikala
The Department of Physical Education and Sport Science was originally housed at the facilities of Parko Mastopoulou in the city of Trikala. In July 1999 the Department was relocated at the new facilities in Karyes. The new facilities are located four kilometers from the city's center.
[edit] Main Library
Operation of the Central Library is conducted in the fully renovated building of the former Bank of Athens at the center of the city of Volos and near the Municipal Center of Plastic Arts (De Chirico Building).
