The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of the leading universities in Sri Lanka. It is located in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, near Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the capital city of Sri Lanka.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura dates back to 1873, when the Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thero laid the foundation stone for the University as a pirivena (Institute of Buddhist and Oriental Studies) named Vidyodaya (meaning "awakening of knowledge").

In 1958, it was reconstituted as the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon by an Act of Parliament. Later, under the Universities Act of 1978, it was re-named as the "University of Sri Jayewardenepura" . in the new administrative capital of Sri Lanka. Currently, its full-time student population is over 8,500,[1] enrolled in the faculties of Arts, Management Studies and Commerce, Applied Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Graduate Studies

The Mission of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, founded upon the tenet Vijja Uppattam Setta (among all that arise knowledge is the greatest), is to excel as an institution of higher learning.

The University is committed to pursuing the transmission of knowledge through teaching, scholarship and research, and active service to the community in an environment which values creativity, freedom of intellectual thought and expression, equal opportunity, fairness and professional growth. The University's endeavor is to contribute to national development by providing a balanced education which blends the finest in theory and practice and by forging interactions between the University and the wider community.

Department of Estate Management & Valuation

The mission of the Department of Estate Management and Valuation is to produce graduates with the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes to fulfill the development requirements in the field of Real Estate Valuation, Real Estate Management and Urban and Regional Planning.

Background

The Department of Estate Management and Valuation was established in 1986 in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura of Sri Lanka as a fully-fledged Department to conduct the B.Sc. (Special) Estate Management and Valuation four-year full time Degree course. The Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the University commenced this Degree course in 1973 as a separate unit in the Department of Business Administration until 1986. From the initial entry of forty students in 1973 the average annual entry to the course is FIFTY. Since the inception of the course approximately more than THOUSAND students have successfully completed the Degree by the year 2005.

The B.Sc. (Special) Estate Management and Valuation Degree is a professional course designed to cater the specific needs in the fields of Real Estate Valuation, Real Estate Management, Urban and Regional Planning and Housing in the Country. This degree program is the first land based professional course commenced at the University level in Sri Lanka and the sole degree program in the country in the field of real Estate Management and Valuation.

Special Facilities for the EMV students

Separate building premise including fully equipped lecture halls with facilities of multimedia, OHP etc. Separate IT resource centre, which provide additional IT traings in addition to the main IT centre of the Faculty. Reading resource centre with wide collection of highly relevant materials in additions to the main campus library. All equipments for drawings and other practicals. Finalcial assistances in collaboration with the EMV Alumni Association.

Special Merit Awards for best performance in the subjects.

Three gold medals are awarded to students at the convocation honoring academic achievements. Opportunities to work with the university staff for the best performed students after completion of the degree successfully.

The Estate Management and Valuation Degree program is a blend of academic knowledge and professional competence. Hence, an affiliation with the professional institutions is of vital importance to maintain this balance. The two key institutions associated with the degree program are, The Institute of Valuers of Sri Lanka and The Institute of Town Planners of Sri Lanka.

Secondary Institutions

The Department also maintains strong links with the Government Department of Valuation, Urban Development Authority, Survey General Department, State Mortgage and Investment Bank, Colombo Municipal Council, and several other local authorities to expose students in practical components of the degree program through workshops, seminars, and short term training program organized by them. In fact, these are some of key places where EMV graduate are employed. Apart from these public sector institutions, there are many leading private sector real estate firms, mortgage and finance companies and NGOs those offer training opportunities, funds for students? activities and job opportunities for EMV graduates.

The Postgraduate Institute of Management is a semi-autonomous body affiliated to the University. It promotes advanced education and professionalism in management in Sri Lanka through the provision of postgraduate instruction, training, research, and development in the various branches of management and administrative studies.
