The Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Santo Tomas is the oldest pharmaceutical institution in the Philippines, established in 1871. The faculty offers undergraduate courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.

Being the oldest in the Philippines, the Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in May 1871 by virtue of the Modification of the Moret decree. It was during the Spanish regime, the degree in pharmacy was one of six in years. In 1901, when the American administration took over, the curriculum was revised to four years. Then in 1916 the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy was further revised to three years. It was until 1930 when a four-year curriculum was adapted. Finally in 1954, the curriculum was revised to five years. In 1984, the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy curriculum was again reduced to four years with the integration of some subjects.

In 1962, Faculty of Pharmacy continued to expand with the addition of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and also the degree of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. In both cases, University of Santo Tomas has gained the distinction of introducing the said undergraduate degrees for the first time in the Philippines. The Faculty of Pharmacy, also has the distinction of being the first institution in the University of Santo Tomas to admit female students during 1924.

The degree of Bachelor in Science in Botany was then offered in the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1986.

The Faculty of Pharmacy affirms its responsibility to develop individuals proficient in the Art and Science of Pharmacy: advancement in technology; improvement in the delivery of health care services and the formation of a progressive and healthy society.

It endeavors to be an institution that serves as a medium to nurture students highly qualified in the various pharmaceutical specialization, sustain a component teaching force meritorious in the professionalism and conscious of its role in the pursuit of the national prosperity and global acceptability.[1]

[edit] Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (5 year curriculum)

Starting in the Academic Year 2006 - 2007 the Faculty had adopted a 5 year curriculum on its Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Degree program. The aim of the curriculum was due to pharmacy graduates of any pharmacy program around the world prior to January 1, 2003, will be allowed to take the US Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE). Since the US Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) requires that all pharmacy graduates must undergo a five-year program to be able to take the FPGEE.

However, the dean, Dr. Priscilla M. Torres pointed out that not all students will be allowed to take the five-year Pharmacy program unless they pass the qualifying exams to be given by the faculty before they reach their senior year. As of now, the fifth year level will be available starting at the Academic Year 2009.[2]
