The University of Pittsburgh School of Education consists of four academic departments Administrative and Policy Studies, Health and Physical Activity, Instruction and Learning, and Psychology in Education. The school is primarily located in Wesley W. Posvar Hall although the school has facilities in the Petersen Events Center, Trees Hall, the Learning Research and Development Center, Falk School, and other locations.[1] As of the 2006-2007 academic year, the student body consisted of 450 full-time and 514 part-time students.[2] The school is currently ranked 35th in graduate education according to US News.[3] As of 2005, $15.5 million in funded research was undertaken in the school.[4]

The School of Education grew out of the Department of Psychology and Education established in 1904. As the department grew, and the demand for local education training increased, the Trustees of the University adopted a plan on February 3, 1910 for the organization of the School.[5] The first term of the School of Education began on September 26th, 1910 and it shared space with the Schools of Mines and Engineering.[6] Will Grant Chambers served as its first Dean and Head Professor.[7]
