The University of Mawlamyaing was founded in 1986. It was a former degree college of the University of Rangoon in the 1950s. The university offers various titles of degrees.
It is the only university in Burma which offers specialization in Marine Science. At Setse, a sea coast town about 60 kilometers south of Mawlamyaing and a popular beach resort, a Marine Science Laboratory is being developed, the first of its kind in Burma under the university.
A new library was opened in 26 January 2004 by former Burmese prime minister Lt-General Khin Nyunt. It holds 106,900 books and periodicals in total.

Its history dated back to the golden age of universities in Burma, Tekkatho Phone Naing, the then professional famous author, sat as the chancellor of the university in the late 80s. As professor Dr. Khin Maung Tint of his age, the university grew suddenly with its great reputation and hostel campus at the south outskirt of Mawlamyaing. The current Rector is U San Tint.
