The University of Jammu was established in 1969 beside the Tawi River. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs; it confers honorary degrees to persons of exceptional calibre. It also affiliates and recognizes colleges. More recently, the University has set up satellite campuses in Bhaderwah, Kathua and Poonch with an accent on vocational courses. Of these campuses, the Bhaderwah Campus is nearest to completion with its building coming up in the land allotted to the Campus at Sungli village.

The university has a well equipped central library that caters the needs of the students of the university as well as others. The library has over 350,000 books and electronic media collection as well. Recently the university library has been renamed as Dhanvantri Library.

The IT Facility are also provided with the aim to support the university's learning, teaching, and research activities. University has acquired VSAT and optical fiber connectivity with bandwidth of 1mpbs and 4 Mbit/s each total 5 Mbit/s from Ernet India, under UGC – Infonet programme. From 5th December 2006, university campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled.

[edit] Optical Fiber Backbone Campus Network

Recognizing the crucial importance of computer networking, the university initiated its efforts by evolving a plan for developing a campus wide computer network with a mandate to link together all the computing resources located in different departments, centers and other buildings of the university for easy and effective access by the university community comprising of faculty, scientific and research personnel, students, and staff to a host of IT- based services such as the e-mail, internet, and access to a large variety of knowledge sources available within the university or outside of the university

The Campus Networking project took concrete shape when in NOV - 2003 a robust networking backbone, based on multi-mode fiber-optic cabling spread over a distance of about 3 km extending to various departments of the university was commissioned using Cisco catalyst 4500 series central switch using backend switches (Cisco 2950) with there embedded firewalls Cisco 5215 and Cisco 515and Intrusion Detection System (IDS) 4215 modules. These hardware firewalls safeguard the network from the outside threats and intrusions.

[edit] Video conferencing Facility

A video conferencing facility has been established in the University of Jammu. This video conferencing Facility suite is in the Brainstorm Room located at vice – Chancellors chamber.The suite offers the ability to hold conferences with many other sites throughout India. It is possible to hold multi-venue conferences with several sites throughout India all connected to each other. This works surprisingly well. The suite comfortably seats 10-15 people at a conference table, with seating available for an additional 7-8 participant on and/or off camera.

The suite has one camera with Sony set top box and 29” color display and sound facilities. The camera has features that allow you to remotely pan around the room to show additional participants as well as zooming in for a close-up if a particular individual is speaking.

In web services, a website is a necessity in today's society. It is considered to be the gateway to the organization. Hundreds of millions of users are connecting to the Internet from all over the world. It is the first place people look before they do business with any organization. A website could present vital company information to the prospective client in terms of students, teachers and researchers by providing online documentation of the university.

It is all due to the efforts made by the Information Technology Cell (IT Cell) constituted by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, IT cell has been assigned the duty and responsibility to develop and update the official website of the university. In 2005, the university takes the effort to come up with a new website with new look and features. This website is simple, dynamic and interactive. Which helps the users to provide information about the universities academic activities, events and other activities related to the campus.

[edit] Web based E-mail facility

E-mail is the term used for the electronic transfer of information between individuals and organizations. University of Jammu recognizes that e-mail has potential to improve communications between the staff as well as external organizations. So University of Jammu has set up its own web based email facilitity, which helps the individuals of the university to correspond to the organizations and other individuals from inside the campus or anywhere from outside.

The University timing is 9.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. The university is officially closed on Saturday and Sunday.
