[edit] History

[edit] Name

In 1952, an Engineering College was setup as a "constituent" college of the University of Peshawar with an initial enrollment of only twenty students (according to the UET Peshawar Annual Report 2006 - 2007). This college was granted the charter to operate as an independent engineering university in 1980 under the name NWFP University of Engineering and Technology. It is also popularly known as UET Peshawar.

[edit] Location

The main campus is in the University Campus area, off University Road, Peshawar.

[edit] Campus

UET Peshawar has four campuses. The main campus is in the University Campus area, off University Road, Peshawar. Recently, three satellite campuses in Abbottabad, Bannu and Mardan have been established. The Peshawar campus, however, remains the nucleus of the University.

[edit] Abbottabad Campus

The Abbottabad campus was inaugurated in October 2002 at the premises of the old Ayub Medical College. Abbottabad campus consists of two departments, Electronics and Architecture.

[edit] Bannu Campus

The Bannu campus became operational in May 2002 at the premises of Comprehensive High School. Currently Bannu campus is offering engineering in only two technologies i.e. Electrical and Civil.

[edit] Mardan Campus

The Mardan campus, also inaugurated in 2002, is spread over 22 acres of area and offers degrees in Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Software Engineering.

[edit] Organization

UET Peshawar is a public university run by the provincial government. Admissions to the university depend on whether the applicants are domiciled in the North West Frontier Province. There are some quota categories that would enable students from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and other provinces under the Federation of Pakistan to enroll.

The head of UET Peshawar is designated as Vice Chancellor, appointed by the Governor of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and mandated to run the University. The Vice Chancellor could be an academic or a non-acadeimc, could be appointed from the existing faculty and administration of the university or from some external sources including retired senior military officers. Currently, the Vice Chancellor is Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani.

There are several senior staff posts that report directly to the Vice Chancellor. These include:

The Department Heads for different academic areas report to the Dean's Office.

UET Peshawar offers Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees in a variety of engineering disciplines. Some of the main departments at UET Peshawar are:

[edit] Semester System

In 2004, UET Peshawar moved from an annual system of examination to the semester system.

[edit] Tenure Track System

In 2006, UET Peshawar introduced the Tenure Track System which is a performance-based pay system.

[edit] Academic Linkages

UET Peshawar has joint research, faculty & student training and exchange programs with various foreign universities including Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), Strathclyde University (UK), McGill University (Canada),George Washington University (USA), University of Petronas (Malaysia) and University of Liverpool (UK), and University of Maryland.

[edit] Research

The primary purpose of UET Peshawar is to produce practising engineers to support and sustain the economic growth of Pakistan from engineering standpoint. However, there has been a growing impetus towards R&D in the recent years, specially with the increase of budgetary allocation dispersed by Federal Government for Higher Education. This has led to increased scholarships for students to foreign universities for higher education, specifically towards PhD. Such scholarships typically carry a mandatory restriction to come back and serve in the parent academic institutes to develop research nuclei in their area of expertise.

[edit] Current Research Areas

Presently, the research activities at UET Peshawar are revolving around these areas:

  • Mechanical Design
  • Design of Earthquake Resisting Structures
  • Mining Techniques
  • Processing of Low Grade Industrial Minerals and Metallic Ores
  • Environmental Management
  • Water Resources Management
  • Application of Computers in Engineering.

[edit] Library

The University Library contains a large collection of latest books and manuscripts related to various engineering and computing disciplines. The Library also offers facilities to students to access electronic journals under “Digital Library Program”, a Higher Education Council (HEC) funded project for both public and private universities.
