[edit] History

The "G. d'Annunzio" University is a relatively young university compared with other universities in Italy. However, despite its relatively short history and existence, it is up to par with other similar institutions of higher education that have a much longer standing tradition; furthermore, it is just as competitive in terms of academic and research endeavor. Moreover, the fact that it is a young university, of relatively recent institution, works to its advantage in that its set-up, facilities, services and annexed research centers were conceived in a contemporary context. The University did not have to contend with a legacy of the past, but just reap the benefits of experience and combine it with a state-of-the art view of education and training.

[edit] Organization and Profile

These are the 11 faculties in which the university is divided into:

The "G. d'Annunzio" University is situated in the Abruzzo region, in particular in and around the metropolitan areas of Chieti and Pescara. The region is located in the center of Italy. It is a region that is characterized by magnificent landscapes, seascapes and mountain ranges as well as thriving urban realities. The "G. d'Annunzio" University derives its name from its most celebrated international literary figure - Gabriele d'Annunzio.

The University is spread over two main campuses. It bases its philosophy on achieving outstanding academic standards in all areas of study and research; all the faculties of University satisfy this credo. Student enrollment at the University is currently in excess of 23,000.

The main campus of the University, The Chieti Campus, is located in Chieti Scalo. The Chancellor's Office, Central Administration buildings and Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Arts and Philosophy, Dentistry, Psychology, Social Sciences and Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences are all situated amidst the green oasis of this campus. The Faculty of Sport Medicine is near the campus, to the CIAPI, Viale Abruzzo. This campus is a short metropolitan bus ride or car trip from the Chieti city center.

Chieti is a medieval town, also studded with Roman ruins, that offers the range of public and private services and facilities required by its inhabitants. In this regard, the old and traditional is juxtaposed against and combines with the new and contemporary. Students who are enrolled in faculties at the Chieti Campus, and who are not of the environs, can either elect to live in Chieti Scalo or in the historical town center of Chieti.

The Pescara Campus (currently undergoing extensive development) instead is located within the City of Pescara, on its outskirts, only a couple kilometers from the center. The Architecture, Economics, Management and Modern Languages Faculties can be found on this campus.

Pescara is a contemporary seaside town with a commercial port, international airport, yacht club, sea link service to the nearby Balkan nations and it is the commercial hub of the Abruzzo region.

It is of particular appeal to the young because of its location by the sea and the night life it offers. Many students who live in Chieti and Chieti Scalo make Pescara a part of their social network. The University also has other off campus sites. For example, the University's Continuing Education Center is located in Torrevecchia Teatina and the School of Nursing is located in Vasto, both in the province of Chieti. The "G. d'Annunzio" University is potentially of appeal to students who are looking to furthering their education in a relatively reserved and relaxed environment, but who nevertheless feel the need to be apart of a more cosmopolitan urban social reality. Students from all over the world are welcome to our University.
