University of Art and Design Helsinki (Taideteollinen korkeakoulu in Finnish) is the largest art university in the Nordic countries. It was founded in 1871. Media Centre Lume - the National Research and Development Center of audiovisual media - is also located in the university. The university grants the following academic degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Licentiate of Arts and Doctor of Arts. The ratio of foreign students is the highest of Finnish universities.

The university has been active in establishing research projects and industry collaborations. During rector Yrjö Sotamaa's period the university has been active in integrating design into the Finnish innovation system. Aalto University – which is due to start in August 2009 – brings together three Finnish top universities; the University of Art and Design Helsinki (TAIK), the University of Technology (TKK) and the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE). The goal for the new university is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in the field of tecnology, business studies and art and design.
