University Wits

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

University Wits were a group of late 16th century english playwrights who were educated at the universities (Oxford or Cambridge). Prominent members of this group were John Lyly,Thomas Lodge,George Peele, Robert Greene and Thomas Nashe. They were looked upon as the literary elite of the day and often ridiculed other playwrights like Shakespeare who did not have the benefit of a university education. However, this group was a short-live phenomenon echoed in mondern times.
