[edit] Overview
University Senior College opened its doors in 2002, designed to provide secondary education suited to senior high school students intending to move on to study at university; USC attracts students from across the Adelaide metropolitan area as well as international students from around the world. The defining feature of USC is its relationship with its parent institution, the University of Adelaide; in addition to sharing a campus, students at the school also share facilities such as the library, drama theatre and cafeteria. USC has no school uniform policy, in keeping with the intended adult learning environment. Additionally, the school is situated within the Adelaide CBD, a short walking distance from shops, public transport and other conveniences.
[edit] Curriculum
All students at University Senior College are expected to study subjects which will achieve a Tertiary Entrance Ranking in the South Australian Certificate of Education. USC offers a broad curriculum which covers all subjects necessary to qualify for SACE, including any prerequisites needed for the individual student's desired university course.
[edit] Scholarships
University Senior College offers limited scholarships for students entering Year 11, ranging in value from 25% to 100% remission of tuition fees. Scholarships are granted based entirely on the results of an examination which is held every winter for the next year's scholarship applicants.
[edit] Learning Support
University Senior College provides a unique learning experience for every indivdual. Teachers willingly set aside time for students to go through their work to better help students realize their aim of achieving the best they can do. Every student is given the best opportunity to recognize their potential and their responsibility to learn in an adult environment, preparing them for university and life in the workplace. Each student has a mentor who is a willing listener, ready and available to help students on any social, emotional and physicology issues. Both year 11 and year 12 levels have a dean of studies, and there is also other professinal help available.
[edit] Life at USC
The college has numerous opportunities for students to become involved in the school and life around them. Every year, Stage 1 students come up with a charter for the school- a document that defines their values and expectations to be able to relate well to fellow students, teachers as well as celebrate University Senior College's changing face as a multicultural school. In particular, Chinese New Year has always been celebrated with many locals also getting involved. A number of clubs have been established at the school: a formal committee, UMAT Group meetings and perhaps most significantly, an Environment Club. The Environment Club continues to make progress to introduce and maintain sustainable practices such as establishing a recycling programme and a pbwiki for the whole school to become involved and share ideas. Currently, the club has organized a World Environment Day school session for the entire campus on June the 5th, 2008 which promises to be an exciting time for the school.A time to reflect the past & press on to the future, primarily however an opportunity to celebrate the environmental progress worldwide as well as here at USC through acknowledging the founders. As a club we seek to raise public awareness of environmental issues faced by Australia through guest speaker/PowerPoint/Environmental displays.& inform students of our responsibility to save the environment.
