The University Hospital of North Staffordshire is a major teaching & research hospital in Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent, England, near the border with Newcastle-under-Lyme. It is one the largest hospitals in the UK, employs over 6,000 people and is a major local employer. The University Hospital was formed by the merging of the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, the City General Hospital (former workhouse) and Hartshill Orthopaedic Hospital. It currently operates on three nearby sites - most departments being on the City General Site, with some departments on the old Royal Infirmary site. There is a separate central outpatients department in Hartshill between the two hospital sites.
In 2003 the hospital was chosen for a £350-million Private Finance Initiative development, and work on major new facilities is now underway. The Hospital is the main teaching hospital for Keele University's School of Medicine. The clinical undergraduate medical school and postgraduate medical school buildings are in the grounds of the hospital, as well as Keele University Health Library and the School of Nursing.
Excavations on the main site have revealed that a large medieval hospital operated on exactly the same site from the 13th Century until the 1580s.
