[edit] History

The school was established as University Demonstration High School in September 1925. It was originally located in the Old Tea Room on the corner of Willey and Spruce Streets. This original school had 35 students and three teachers, and quickly attracted more people. In 1928, strained with over two hundred students, the school was relocated to the third and fourth floors of a building on the corner of Stewart Street and University Avenue. In 1930, construction on an official school building for University Demonstration High began. During the interim period, the school occupied the old library on the West Virginia University Campus until 1933 when the official school building was finished at an estimated cost of $283,837. This school was, and still is, located at the top of North Price Street. In 1972, West Virginia University turned University High School over to the Monongalia County Public School System, allowing major renovations to take place, including the addition of a gymnasium, an annex, and various refurbishments. In 1991-1992, continued renovation included adding a tower and a new cafeteria to the building. This renovation coincided with the establishment of Preston High School, and resulted in the transfer of over 100 Bruceton High students to University High School, which the Preston County School System stopped allowing Bruceton Middle School students to transfer there in 2007. In 1993, ninth graders were added to the student body, greatly increasing the student population. Several trailers have subsequently been brought to University High School to accommodate its increasing number of students.

[edit] Trailer Classes

Due to lack of room in the main building, University High School has nine trailers containing twelve classes, the nurse's office, and other teacher offices. There are seven trailers (eight classrooms) in front and to the side of and two behind the school (four classrooms). The classes in the trailers are History, Health, English, Math, Driver's Education, Agriculture, and Technology (Shop). A Spanish class was formerly located in one of the trailers in the back, but was placed inside the building during the 2005-2006 school year.
