The Universität der Bundeswehr München (Bundeswehr University Munich) is one of the two Universities of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) that both were founded in 1973. The university offers academic education mainly for German officers and officer candidates. Graduates receive a Bachelor's degree after a maximum of 3 1/4 years and if they have excelled in their Bachelor's studies a Master's degree after 4 to 4 1/4 years. As the studies have to be finished in a shorter time than at common German universities the academic year consists of three trimesters instead of the normal two semesters. In consequence of this, the curriculum contains about one third more content per year.

Unlike other nations' military academies, the universities of the German federal armed forces only offer study courses with almost no relation to the military and which correspond to courses at regular German universities. Due to this there also is a small number (~50) of highly gifted civil students who are sponsored by industrial companies which have signed an agreement with the ministry of defense concerning this issue. Furthermore it is possible for civilians to receive a doctorate or to qualify as a university lecturer. All of the professors are civilians and the number of professors per student is higher than at normal German universities.
