Universidade Estadual de Londrina (abbreviated UEL; State University of Londrina) is one of the public universities of the State of Paraná, Brazil.

UEL was created in 1970, being recognized officially by Federal Ordinance 69.234/71. In 1987 'free teaching' was implemented at the Institution, and in 1991 it gained autonomy from the State. Since the 2005 admission exam, UEL adopted an official system of quotas for black students, as well as quotas for applicants originating from public schools, in order to attend to social and minority support policies. Located in the city of Londrina - second largest city in the state, and the fourth in the south of the country - Londrina is in an important position for most students coming from northern Paraná, and from other states, like São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Santa Catarina.

UEL is considered among Brazil's top academic and research institutes.

Also, UEL is very well known nationwide by its Law School (one of the most traditional Law Schools in Brazil), whose students have the fame of making it be among the top three schools of the OAB Exam (equivalent to the US Bar Exam) of São Paulo and Paraná states. The Times Higher Education 2007 World University Rankings ranks UEL as the 215th top university in the world, with the forth ranking in Latin America. According to the 2007 Academic Ranking of World Universities, published by the Shanghai Jiaotong University, UEL is placed in the group of the 102-150nd top world universities. The EGI (European Graduate Institute) reported that UEL is the 85th best university in the world, according to the 2006 edition. UEL is considered the 67th most productive university on the globe.

[edit] Admissions

Students are admitted by an entrance exam, also known as vestibular exam, composed by two steps:

- First Phase is composed of 60 multiple-choice questions (Portuguese, English, Chemistry, Math, Physics, Geography, History and Biology).

- Second Phase is composed of up to 20 descriptive questions related to their career choice.

Moreover, candidates who only studied in public schools, during their high-school term, get a 3% bonus in their First and Second Phases scores, due to the bad quality of Brazilian public education (with some exceptions).

A renowned publication (Guia do Estudante - Student's Guide) indicated that UEL is 2006's one of the best university in Brazil (Top 5).
