[edit] History and profile
The Universal Robina Corporation was founded in 1954 by John Gokongwei, Jr. through the establishment of the Universal Corn Products, which was a cornstarch manufacturing plant in Pasig City. The company expanded and became involved in a wide range of food businesses including the manufacture and distribution of consumer foods, flour milling and sugar milling and refining. The company also ventured in raising hogs and day-old chicks and the manufacture of animal and fish feeds, glucose and veterinary compounds. The company’s businesses are operated through divisions and subsidiaries that were organized in three core business segments: (a) branded consumer foods, (b) agro-industrial products and (c) commodity food products.[1]
The company's famous trade brands include C2 Green Tea, Jack n' Jill sweet and salty snacks and confectioneries, Hunt's tomato products, and the Payless and Nissin Cup noodle products. The noodle products are manufactured with the cooperation of Nissin Foods, a Japanese firm.[1]
URC’s branded consumer foods division also manufactures and distributes a diverse mix of other snack, chocolate, candy, biscuit, bakery, beverage, noodles and tomato-based products. These products are distributed to 42,000 supermarkets, groceries and sari-sari stores in the Philippines. Its products are also being exported to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan and China.[1]
URC is a core subsidiary of JG Summit Holdings, Inc. (JGSHI) which is one of the largest business conglomerates listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange.[1]
URC owned the Philippine Basketball Association franchise Great Taste Coffee Makers which played from the inaugural 1975 season to 1992 when the company sold the team to Sta. Lucia Realty. The Coffee Makers won 6 PBA championships.
