The UNITED SIKH STUDENTS Association, or USS, of the New Jersey Institute of Technology & Rutgers University – Newark is a religious organization dedicated to establishing and maintaining Sikh societies on college campuses in United States. It serves to provide coordination and support for affiliated USS chapters in colleges across North America. Established in 1993, the organization now has chapters in colleges across the continent[1], and is the precursor of the Sikh Society of North America and several other Sikh organizations.

[edit] History

USS was formed in 1993 at the campus of NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) by a conference of Sikh students from around the U.S. One of the largest USSs in the United States is the USS Berkley.

[edit] Organization

The United Sikh Students Association of NJIT/RU is also known as USS. It is an umbrella organization for all of the chapters at various campuses across the continent and promote Sikhism. Local chapters are only loosely connected with the parent institution, and often take different names, such as "Sikh Student Association", or "Sikh Discussion Group". There is no fixed hierarchy between USS and local chapters; as such, the policies and views of the sikh organization are not necessarily shared by local chapters. The United States is divided into three zones in the US. Each zone has a zonal representative, chosen by the members of the affiliated chapters within that zone. Chapters make up regional councils.

[edit] Activities

The USS raises funds for the homeless during Baisakhi. The event known as Langar started at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and now has several free food services across the United States in various Gurudwaras. The USS recently launched a "Peace...not Prejudice" campaign to dispel stereotypes. It is the first national organization to have a convert to Sikh who was born in the U.S. as its head. The former President of USS was an American-born male.
